Improving the Robustness of Myoelectric Pattern Recognition for Upper Limb Prostheses by Covariate Shift Adaptation.
Fundamental changes over time of surface EMG signal characteristics are a challenge for myocontrol algorithms controlling prosthetic devices. These changes are generally caused by electrode shifts after donning and doffing, sweating, additional weight or varying arm positions, which results in a change of the signal distribution-a scenario often referred to as covariate shift. A substantial decrease in classification accuracy due to these factors hinders the possibility to directly translate EMG signals into accurate myoelectric control patterns outside laboratory conditions. ⋯ In the offline data analysis, the classification accuracy remained above 92% over five days with the proposed approach, whereas it decreased to 75% without adaptation. Similarly, in the online study, with the proposed approach the performance increased by 25% compared to a test without adaptation. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can contribute to improve robustness of myoelectric pattern recognition methods in daily life applications.

Comparative StudyImpaired Inhibitory Force Feedback in Fixed Dystonia.
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a multifactorial disorder associated with an aberrant host response to tissue injury. About 25% of CRPS patients suffer poorly understood involuntary sustained muscle contractions associated with dysfunctional reflexes that result in abnormal postures (fixed dystonia). A recent modeling study simulated fixed dystonia (FD) caused by aberrant force feedback. ⋯ A neuromuscular model was fitted to the experimental data to separate the distinct contributions of position, velocity and force feedback, as well as co-contraction to the motor behavior. The neuromuscular modeling indicated that inhibitory force feedback is deregulated in patients with FD, for both CRPS and non-CRPS patients. From previously published simulation results and the present experimental study, it is concluded that aberrant force feedback plays a role in fixed dystonia.

A Miniature, Fiber-Coupled, Wireless, Deep-Brain Optogenetic Stimulator.
Controlled, wireless neuromodulation using miniature implantable devices is a long-sought goal in neuroscience. It will allow many studies and treatments that are otherwise impractical. Recent studies demonstrate advances in neuromodulation through optogenetics, but test animals are typically tethered, severely limiting experimental possibilities. ⋯ We demonstrate its use in a behavioral experiment targeting a deep brain structure in freely behaving mice. To allow its rapid and widespread adoption, we developed this stimulator using commercially available components. The modular and accessible optogenetic stimulator presented advances the wireless toolset available for freely behaving animal experiments.

Frontal-temporal synchronization of EEG signals quantified by order patterns cross recurrence analysis during propofol anesthesia.
Characterizing brain dynamics during anesthesia is a main current challenge in anesthesia study. Several single channel electroencephalogram (EEG)-based commercial monitors like the Bispectral index (BIS) have suggested to examine EEG signal. But, the BIS index has obtained numerous critiques. ⋯ The prediction probability of 0.9 and 0.84 for OPL and BIS specified that the OPL index correlated more strongly with effect-site propofol concentration. Also, our new index makes faster reaction to transients in EEG recordings based on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic model parameters and demonstrates less variability at the point of loss of consciousness (standard deviation of 0.04 for OPL compared with 0.09 for BIS index). The result show that the OPL index can estimate anesthetic state of patient more efficiently than the BIS index in lightly sedated state with more tolerant of artifacts.

Characterization of a benchmark database for myoelectric movement classification.
In this paper, we characterize the Ninapro database and its use as a benchmark for hand prosthesis evaluation. The database is a publicly available resource that aims to support research on advanced myoelectric hand prostheses. The database is obtained by jointly recording surface electromyography signals from the forearm and kinematics of the hand and wrist while subjects perform a predefined set of actions and postures. ⋯ Furthermore, statistical analysis of these results shows that classification accuracy is negatively correlated with the subject's Body Mass Index. The analysis and the results described in this paper aim to be a strong baseline for the Ninapro database. Thanks to the Ninapro database (and the characterization described in this paper), the scientific community has the opportunity to converge to a common position on hand movement recognition by surface electromyography, a field capable to strongly affect hand prosthesis capabilities.
