ReviewRegulation of Synthetic Biology: Developments Under the Convention on Biological Diversity and Its Protocols.
The primary international forum deliberating the regulation of "synthetic biology" is the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), along with its subsidiary agreements concerned with the biosafety of living modified organisms (LMOs; Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the CBD), and access and benefit sharing in relation to genetic resources (Nagoya Protocol to the CBD). This discussion has been underway for almost 10 years under the CBD agenda items of "synthetic biology" and "new and emerging issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity," and more recently within the scope of Cartagena Protocol topics including risk assessment and risk management, and "digital sequence information" jointly with the Nagoya Protocol. ⋯ The CBD debates are characterized by polarized views on the adequacy of existing regulatory mechanisms for "new" types of LMOs, including the scope of the current regulatory frameworks, and procedures and tools for risk assessment and risk mitigation and/or management. This paper provides an overview of international developments in biotechnology regulation, including the application of the Cartagena Protocol and relevant policy developments, and reviews the development of the synthetic biology debate under the CBD and its Protocols, including the major issues expected in the lead up to and during the 2020 Biodiversity Conference.

Estimation of an Elite Road Cyclist Performance in Different Positions Based on Numerical Simulations and Analytical Procedures.
The aim of this study was to use numerical simulations and analytical procedures to compare a cyclist's performance in three different cycling positions. An elite level road cyclist competing at a national level was recruited for this research. The bicycle was 7 kg and the cyclist 55 kg. ⋯ The cyclist's energy cost in the upright position differed 2 to 16% in comparison to the elbows position and the elbows position had less 2 to 14% energy cost in comparison to the dropped position. The estimated time of arrival was computed for a 220,000 m distance and it varied between 7,715.03 s (2 h:8 min:24 s) and 220,000 s (61 h:6 min:40 s) across the different speeds and positions. In the elbows position, is expected that a cyclist may improve the winning time up to 23% in comparison to he upright and dropped position across the studied speeds.

Mendelian Randomization Analysis Reveals a Causal Effect of Urinary Sodium/Urinary Creatinine Ratio on Kidney Function in Europeans.
Salt restriction was recommended in clinical practice guideline for chronic kidney disease (CKD) treatment, but its effect on kidney outcomes remains conflicting. We aimed to test the causal effect of salt intake, using estimated 24-h sodium excretion from spot urinary sodium/urinary creatinine (UNa/UCr) ratio as a surrogate, on renal function using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). Genetic instruments for UNa/UCr were derived from a recent genome-wide association study of 218,450 European-descent individuals in the UK Biobank. ⋯ The average 24-h sodium excretion was estimated to be approximately 2.6 g per day for women and 3.7 g per day for men. This study provides evidence that sodium excretion, well above the recommendation of <2 g per day of sodium intake, might not have a harmful effect on kidney function. Clinical trials are warranted to evaluate the sodium restriction target on kidney function.
