Previous studies have identified relationships between autonomic function and pain perception. Anxiety was found to influence both autonomic and pain responses. We examined the effect of anxiety level on parasympathetic function and pain perception as well as on the relationships between these 2 systems. ⋯ This study demonstrates the role of anxiety level on the relationships between parasympathetic function and pain perception. We suggest that a situation of high anxiety leads to higher norepinephrine levels that can influence both parasympathetic function and pain perception, thus explaining the significant relationships found between these 2 systems only in subjects with high anxiety.

Smokers with fibromyalgia have greater pain intensity and function impairment compared to nonsmokers. Patients' perceptions of interactions between smoking and fibromyalgia symptoms have not been described. The primary aim of this study was to report the perceptions of female smokers with fibromyalgia on how smoking affects symptoms. ⋯ Smokers with fibromyalgia reported smoking helped to cope with fibromyalgia pain but generally did not directly ameliorate fibromyalgia physical symptoms.

Pain is a prevailing feature of cervical dystonia (CD), the most common form of focal dystonia. This analysis examined pain relief after onabotulinumtoxinA treatment in CD subjects with moderate/severe pain from the Cervical Dystonia Patient Registry for Observation of OnabotulinumtoxinA Efficacy (CD PROBE). ⋯ Results from this real-world clinical registry indicate that a majority of CD subjects with moderate/severe neck pain experience significant relief following onabotulinumtoxinA treatment.
