Leadership's perceptions of palliative care during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study.
Palliative care (PC) played a leading role in the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known regarding health system leadership's perceptions. ⋯ Our findings suggest that healthcare leadership increasingly understands the value of PC and its critical role within the health system and during future public health emergencies; this was further reinforced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare leadership recognizes and highlights the need to increase investments in this specialty, both financially and educationally. In doing so, healthcare costs will be lowered, patient satisfaction will increase, and care will be better coordinated.

Palliative care (PC) clinicians are well poised to help people with disabilities (PWD) live well in the context of serious illness. PC prioritizes person-centered care with a focus on function, autonomy, and quality of life. ⋯ An understanding of the unique experiences and needs of PWD can advance the delivery of comprehensive, equitable PC for this population. In this article, we provide 10 tips to help PC clinicians develop an informed disability lens in their approach to care.

As people live longer with life-limiting illnesses, there is greater need for skills and knowledge in palliative care (PC). Medical students should acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and confidence during training for future decision-making. However, most graduates across Europe feel unprepared to provide PC. To develop PC training for medical students, we must gain perspective on their understanding of PC and their learning needs. ⋯ Graduate entry medical students view PC as a vital subject within their medical school training. The study highlights challenges in providing education and sufficient placement in PC to correlate with the respondents' perceived needs. The findings contribute to the growing literature surrounding the importance of PC education within the medical school curriculum.
