We have previously demonstrated that the use of a daily "Quality Rounds Checklist" (QRC) can increase compliance with evidence-based prophylactic measures and decrease complications in a busy trauma intensive care unit (ICU) over a 3-month period. This study was designed to determine the sustainability of QRC use over 1 year and examine the relationship between compliance and outcome improvement. ⋯ The use of a QRC facilitates sustainable improvement in compliance rates for clinically significant prophylactic measures in a busy Level I trauma ICU. The daily use of the QRC, requiring just a few minutes per patient to complete, equates to cost-effective improvement in patient outcomes.

Perspectives in quality: designing the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
The World Health Organization's Patient Safety Programme created an initiative to improve the safety of surgery around the world. In order to accomplish this goal the programme team developed a checklist with items that could and, if at all possible, should be practised in all settings where surgery takes place. ⋯ The authors of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist drew lessons from the aviation experience to create a safety tool that supports essential clinical practice. In order to inform the methodology for development of future checklists in health care, we review how we applied lessons learned from the aviation experience in checklist development to the development of the Surgical Safety Checklist and also discuss the differences that exist between aviation and medicine that impact the use of checklists in health care.

Image Gently, Step Lightly: promoting radiation safety in pediatric interventional radiology.
The Image Gently, Step Lightly campaign is an education and awareness campaign focusing on radiation safety in pediatric interventional radiology. To promote radiation safety by standardizing workflow and encouraging team responsibility, the campaign Website includes a procedural checklist that the medical team may use to review radiation safety steps before each pediatric interventional procedure. ⋯ Use of this checklist can be an effective tool in the ongoing effort to maximize radiation safety during interventional procedures.

The Healthy Kids Check aims to gather health information, identify health problems and promote healthy lifestyles around the time of the 4 years of age vaccinations. It consists of a checklist of examinations and assessments, six of which are mandatory. ⋯ The proposed examination enables general practitioners to remain positively engaged with families and contribute toward the health surveillance of preschool children. Changes to the Medicare Benefits Schedule, which support time based reimbursement for preventive healthcare may encourage greater uptake of the Healthy Kids Check.

Use of the World Health Organization's Surgical Safety Checklist has been associated with a significant reduction in major postoperative complications after inpatient surgery. We hypothesized that implementing the checklist in the United States would generate cost savings for hospitals. ⋯ In a hospital with a baseline major complication rate after surgery of at least 3 percent, the checklist generates cost savings once it prevents at least five major complications. Using the checklist would both save money and improve the quality of care in hospitals throughout the United States.
