Comparative effects of three doses of intravenous ketorolac or morphine on emesis and analgesia for restorative dental surgery in children.
The optimal dose of intravenous ketorolac tromethamine (ketorolac), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug has not been determined in children. There are only limited published data on the use of intravenous ketorolac for paediatric analgesia. This study compares the analgesic and emetic effect of three different doses of ketorolac with morphine in paediatric dental surgical out-patients. ⋯ Ketorolac, in all doses studied (0.75, 1.0 and 1.5 mg.kg-1) was as effective an analgesic as morphine 0.1 mg.kg-1 given intravenously at induction to children having restorative dental surgery. Its use was associated with a significant reduction in the incidence of postoperative vomiting.

Patient-controlled analgesia with sufentanil: a comparison of two different methods of administration.
To examine the safety and analgesic efficacy of sufentanil administered via either epidural or intravenous (i.v.) patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) in patients recovering from gynecologic surgery. ⋯ The main advantage of EPCA sufentanil in this postsurgical setting was its ability to provide a more rapid onset of analgesia than traditional i.v. PCA with morphine while offering greater safety than i.v. sufentanil.

[Patient acceptance of patient-controlled intranasal analgesia (PCINA)].
Patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (i.v.-PCA) represents the gold standard in the management of acute postoperative pain. However, in many countries i.v.-PCA is rarely used. Recent clinical studies demonstrated that intranasal fentanyl titration provides a rapid and safe form and pain management. In the present study we investigated patients' acceptance and assessment of patient-controlled intranasal analgesia (PCINA) and compared it to intravenous PCA and the customarily prescribed pain therapy. ⋯ The results demonstrate that the patients' satisfaction with PCINA is comparable to that with i.v.-PCA. Both PCINA and i.v.-PCA were assessed as superior to the customarily prescribed pain management (P = 0.0001). Patients' acceptance of a given form of pain management is mainly related to its efficiency. However, side effects such as pain on injection with i.v.-PCA, or frequent opioid administration with PCINA, must be considered when assessing a method of pain control. Patients' global assessment includes both efficiency and side effects. PCINA represents an interesting alternative non-invasive method for postoperative pain management.

[Use of new elastomeric pumps and PCA in postoperative pain control in thoraco-abdominal surgery].
36 patients submitted to interventions for thoraco-abdominal surgery has been submitted to antalgic post-operatory therapy with elastomeric pump at a continuous intravenous infusion and patient controlled analgesia (PCA). The patients have been randomized in three groups. The patients of the 1 degree group received 30 minutes before of the end of the surgical intervention 30 mg of Ketorolac. ⋯ In the 2 degree group to the awakening (T0), the pain was middle-tall (5.50 +/- 2.32) and an expressive reduction appeared at the time T2 (3.60 +/- 1.35 P < 0.005). In the 3 degrees group have not recorded a diminution of the pain if not after 24 hours from the end of the intervention deposit the intramuscular antalgic therapy. In conclusion, the system infusion + PCA represents an indubitable advantage in comparison with the traditional antalgic therapy as for concern the entity of the reduction of the pain as because it permits the use of a smaller quality of drugs.

Bowel function recovery after radical hysterectomies: thoracic epidural bupivacaine-morphine versus intravenous patient-controlled analgesia with morphine: a pilot study.
To determine if the use of continuous epidural bupivacaine-morphine in the perioperative period is associated with a significant decrease in the recovery time of postoperative ileus when compared with parenteral morphine administration. ⋯ The use of thoracic epidural bupivacaine-morphine results in a decrease in the duration of postoperative ileus, which was associated with earlier hospital discharge.
