Randomized Controlled Trial
A pilot study of CPAP adherence promotion by peer buddies with sleep apnea.
To evaluate patient ratings of the acceptability of a peer buddy system (PBS). To promote continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy adherence in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). To obtain preliminary data on the effectiveness of PBS on sleep-specific health-related quality of life and CPAP adherence. ⋯ Parthasarathy S; Wendel C; Haynes PL; Atwood C; Kuna S. A pilot study of CPAP adherence promotion by peer buddies with sleep apnea. J Clin Sleep Med 2013;9(6):543-550.

Randomized Controlled TrialGender differences in pain modulation by a sweet stimulus in adults: A randomized study.
This study aimed to examine whether or not there are gender differences in sweet stimulus-induced analgesia for cold pain in adults. In a randomized cross-over design, twenty men and 20 women held either a 24% sucrose solution or distilled water in their mouth before and while they immersed their hand in cold water and their pain response was examined. ⋯ The findings reveal that the analgesic effect of a sweet stimulus on the pain threshold is influenced by gender differences in human adults, indicating that sweet stimulus-induced analgesia has a brief analgesic effect, particularly for men. Although more research is warranted, the sweet stimulus could be put to practical application as an adjunct to acute pain management for men.

Randomized Controlled TrialIntramedullary nailing of clavicular midshaft fractures in adults using titanium elastic nail.
Studies showed elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) of displaced midclavicular fractures has excellent outcomes, as well as high complication rates and specific problems. The aim was to discuss ESIN of midshaft clavicular fractures. ⋯ ESIN is a safe minimally invasive surgical technique with lower complication rate, faster return to daily activities, excellent cosmetic and better functional results, restoration of clavicular length for treating mid-shaft clavicular fractures, resulting in high overall satisfaction, which can be regard as an alternative to plate fixation or nonoperative treatment of mid-shaft clavicular fractures.

Comparative efficacy and tolerability of pholcodine and dextromethorphan in the management of patients with acute, non-productive cough : a randomized, double-blind, multicenter study.
The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of pholcodine with that of dextromethorphan, one of the most used cough sedative products, in patients with acute, non-productive cough. ⋯ These findings indicate that the efficacy of a 3-day course of pholcodine is similar to that of dextromethorphan in the treatment of adult patients with acute, non-productive cough. Both medications were well tolerated.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialComparison of heart rate changes after neostigmine-atropine administration during recovery from propofol-N2O and isoflurane-N2O anesthesia.
Propofol augments the reduction of heart rate (HR) in combination with cholinergic agents and attenuates the HR response to atropine. We examined whether propofol anesthesia was associated with an increased incidence and extent of bradycardia after neostigmine-atropine administration compared with the effects of isoflurane anesthesia. ⋯ We conclude that propofol anesthesia attenuates the initial increases in HR, enhances the subsequent decreases in HR, and increases the incidence of bradycardia after neostigmine-atropine injections compared with the effects of isoflurane anesthesia.
