Case ReportsPoint-of-Care Ultrasound for Pediatric Vaginal Obstruction in the Emergency Department: A Case Series.
Point-of-care ultrasound can be an effective tool to facilitate the evaluation of abdominal and pelvic pain in children. We present a series of 3 pediatric patients with nonspecific abdominal and pelvic symptoms in whom point-of-care ultrasound expedited diagnosis, guided decision-making, prompted subspecialist consultation, and led to definitive management of vaginal obstruction.

A descriptive study of domestic and family violence presentations to an emergency department in the Northern Territory.
Examine the nature of domestic and family violence (DFV) presentations to an ED in the Northern Territory and identify potential gaps in service delivery. ⋯ The data highlights the need for a 24 h trauma-informed, culturally safe and integrated service to support people experiencing DFV. This could be achieved by a specialist unit designed and staffed by First Nations health practitioners.

Impact of hospital-administered extended-release naltrexone on readmission rates for patients with alcohol use disorder.
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a persistent public health concern, contributing significantly to mortality and morbidity. This study aims to evaluate the impact of in-hospital extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX) administration on alcohol-related outcomes. ⋯ In-hospital initiation of XR-NTX for AUD was associated with a significant decrease in ED visits and length of hospital stay. While no significant impact on the number of hospitalisations was observed overall, there was a substantial reduction in hospital readmissions and ED visits among high utilisers. Our findings suggest the potential benefits of in-hospital XR-NTX, emphasising the need for further research to establish causal relationships, assess cost-effectiveness and explore effectiveness across diverse patient populations. Effective in-hospital interventions, such as XR-NTX, hold promise for improving patient outcomes and reducing the healthcare burden associated with AUD.

Health consumers' ethical concerns towards artificial intelligence in Australian emergency departments.
To investigate health consumers' ethical concerns towards the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in EDs. ⋯ Health consumers view AI as an emerging technology that they want to see comprehensively regulated to ensure it functions safely and securely with EDs. Without considerations made for the ethical design, implementation and use of AI technologies, health consumer trust and acceptance in the use of these tools will be limited.
