Impact of Surgical Team Involvement at the Time of Trauma Activation for Pediatric Patients With Motorized Cycle or All-Terrain Vehicle Injury Mechanism.
At our institution, level 2 trauma (L2T) activations are primarily managed by pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians, whereas level 1 activations are co-managed by pediatric surgery and PEM. Starting in September 2019, the response to L2T activations due to all-terrain vehicles or motorized cycles (ATVs/MCs) changed to include surgical assessment upon patient arrival due to increased likelihood of significant injuries and need for higher level of care. The impact of PEM/surgery co-management of ATV/MC L2T patients on time to an admission decision is unknown. ⋯ Early surgical assessment for pediatric patients with ATV/MC injuries improved time to an admission decision and trauma communication huddle compliance. Next steps include identifying process improvement opportunities to decrease ED total length of stay for patients with ATV/MC injuries.

To evaluate the short-term surgical outcomes and the reimbursement patterns, after treatment of type 2 odontoid fractures using the anterior or posterior approach. ⋯ In this matched analysis, the anterior approach for type 2 odontoid fractures was superior to the posterior approach. The anterior approach was associated with significantly shorter operation times, hospital stays, fewer transfusions, nonroutine discharges, and higher reimbursements.

Concept Maps (CM) aid in the acquisition of new information, and comprehend prior knowledge with better retention. Their use is not explored in undergraduate surgical education in our country, hence this study aimed to compare the surgery test scores of undergraduate medical students taught by concept maps and interactive lectures. ⋯ Concept Maps is an effective and promising way to give learners better understanding of complex concepts in short amounts of time. providing valuable evidence for instituting the use of concept maps as a continuous teaching strategy for medical students.

To determine the effectiveness of video-based teaching in surgery residents by comparing it to the routine operating room traditional teaching. ⋯ Video-based teaching has higher learning gain irrespective of the fact that both groups exhibit statistically significant results in all seven domains of the global rating system. Recorded video evaluation was found feasible and reliable tool for formative assessment.
