Traumatic acute subdural hematoma (aSDH) is a severe disease. Surgical treatment is still controversially discussed, especially in patients with additional signs of cerebral herniation. However, previously investigated patient populations were heterogeneous. We therefore performed an analysis of our institutional data in a large homogenous selection of patients with traumatic aSDH to analyze factors determining clinical outcome. ⋯ We provide detailed data on patients with aSDH and signs of cerebral herniation. Despite mydriasis, favorable outcome may be achieved in many patients. Nevertheless, careful individual decision making is necessary for each patient, especially when signs of cerebral herniation have persisted for a long time.

Brain drawings following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and links to illness perceptions and health outcomes - Findings from a population-based study.
Individuals' illness perceptions predict health behaviours and influence functional outcomes. This study examined associations between a novel assessment of illness perceptions, in the form of adult's brain drawings after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and questionnaire measures of illness perceptions, quality of life and post-concussive symptoms. ⋯ Drawings post-TBI offer a simple, cost- and time-effective way to begin discussions and improve understanding of peoples' illness perceptions.

The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and stability of symptom reporting in a healthy military sample and to develop reliable change indices for two commonly used self-report measures in the military health care system. ⋯ Postconcussion-like symptoms are not unique to mild TBI and are commonly reported in a healthy soldier sample. It is important for clinicians to use normative data when evaluating a service member or veteran and when evaluating the likelihood that a change in symptom reporting is reliable and clinically meaningful.
