To examine the effects of temperature on the daily cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Data on the daily cases of HFMD in Lanzhou from 2008 to 2015 were obtained, and meteorological data from the same period were collected. A distributed lag nonlinear model was fitted to reveal the relationship between the daily mean temperature and the daily cases of HFMD. ⋯ The cumulative risks of high temperature (20.2°C and 25.2°C) in the total, age-specific, and gender-specific groups peaked on lag 14 days; RR was higher in girls than in boys and in children aged 1 to 2 years than in other age groups. However, the effects of low temperature (-5.3°C, 2.0°C, and 12.8°C) were not significant for both gender-specific and age-specific patients. High temperature may increase the risk of HFMD, and boys and children aged 3 to 5 years were at higher risks on lag 0 day; however, the cumulative risks in girls and children aged 1 to 2 years increased with the increasing number of lag days.

Airway invasion in non-neurologically ill patients with dysphagia: Contributing factors and associated problems during swallowing process. A retrospective observational study.
Dysphagia can occur among patients receiving medical care despite having no history of neurologic disease. The current study aimed to investigate factors contributing to airway invasion among non-neurologically ill patients with dysphagia. This retrospective study included 52 non-neurologically ill patients who complained of swallowing difficulty and consulted the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine for videofluoroscopic swallowing studies between January 2018 and June 2019. ⋯ Moreover, bolus formation, tongue-to-palate contact, premature bolus loss, vallecular residue, coating of pharyngeal wall, and aspiration score differed significantly between both groups (P < .05). Airway invasion among non-neurologically ill patients was related to decreased functional ambulation ability, lower serum albumin concentration, and presence of CAP. The results presented herein can help guide clinical management aimed at preventing airway invasion among non-neurologically ill patients.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients, especially those with anti-aquaporin-4 antibody positivity, a water channel expressed on astrocytes, is often accompanied by autoimmune diseases (ADs) including Sjogren syndrome (SS). Here, we report a case of a young Chinese woman with recurrent optic neuritis who was diagnosed with asymptomatic SS and NMOSD. ⋯ SS accompanied with NMOSD is common in clinical practice, and always with the positive Anti-AQP4 antibody as a potential biomarker. Patients with SS and NMOSD showed significant neurological symptoms and had a worse prognosis than SS patients with negative anti-AQP4 antibody because of cross-immunity between anti-SSA antibody and anti-AQP4 antibody. Rheumatologists and ophthalmologists should pay attention to this and perform appropriate tests.

The impact of COVID-19 on routine patient care from a laboratory perspective.
Globally, few studies have examined the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine patient care and follow-up. ⋯ This study, focusing on the short-term consequences of the SA response to the COVID-19 pandemic, found that routine follow-up of patients with communicable and non-communicable diseases was affected. Future studies are necessary to evaluate the long-term consequences of the pandemic for these patient groups.
