Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound formulations are selected according to different populations, with strong targeting and less adverse reactions. As a complex disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has limited efficacy in the use of conventional treatment regiments, short life cycle, high cost, many side effects, and low quality of life. It is urgent to seek new alternative therapies. Clinical practice shows that Chinese herbal compound combined with western medicine has certain therapeutic advantages, but there is no evidence of evidence-based medicine. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal compound combined with western medicine in the treatment of ALS. ⋯ This study will provide reliable evidence for the clinical application of Chinese herbal compound combined with western medicine in the treatment of ALS.OSF registration number: DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/R5XG4.

Case Reports
Case report: fatal pneumonia caused by new sequence type Legionella pneumophilia serogroup 1.
Legionnaires' disease is caused by Legionella bacteria, and commonly manifests as pneumonia and has a high fatality rate. ⋯ A key finding of this study is that treatment for suspected Legionnaires' disease must be administered rapidly, as infection with Legionella may give rise to secondary pathogenic infections.

Recent research shows that in-stent restenosis (ISR) occurs in half of the patients treated with stenting of femoral and popliteal artery for lower extremity arteriosclerotic occlusive disease (LEASO). Combined therapy is mainly used clinically to obtain better medium- and long-term treatment outcomes and reduce the occurrences of reintervention, among which, the combination of excimer laser ablation (ELA) and drug eluting balloon (DEB) is a new and effective choice. ⋯ The combination of ELA and DEB is useful and effective for ISR of peripheral vessel after stent implantation, and this surgical method is worthwhile but need further clinical research for safety confirmation.

Observational Study
Clinical impact of echocardiography-defined pulmonary hypertension on the clinical outcome in patients with multiple myeloma.
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a complication of multiple myeloma (MM); however, the clinical outcomes and prognosis are relatively not well known. We aimed to investigate the risk factors of transthoracic echocardiography-defined PH and its impact on the clinical outcome in patients with MM. A retrospective study was performed using data from the Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital database for patients who underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) within 1 month of the MM diagnosis between January 2007 and December 2017. ⋯ This study reports that the prevalence of TTE-defined PH is higher in patients with MM than in the general population. Moreover, TTE-defined PH and a history of CHF are the independent prognostic factors for all-cause and cardiovascular death in patients with MM. These results highlight the risk of associated cardiovascular disease in patients with MM and emphasize the importance of management strategies that prevent the deterioration of cardiac function.

Comparative Study
Quality of life among patients with autoimmune hepatitis in remission: A comparative study.
Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is lower in individuals with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) than in the general population. However, previous evaluations of HRQOL for AIH have included a broad range of disease activities. The aim of this study was to clarify HRQOL among patients with AIH in remission. ⋯ Overall score (5.6 vs 5.9, P = .02) and fatigue (5.2 vs 5.6, P = .01) and worry (5.6 vs 6.0, P = .01) domain scores of the CLDQ were significantly lower in patients with AIH in remission than in CHC with eradicated HCV, and similar to scores except for the systemic symptoms domain in patients with PBC. Disease duration was associated with lower scores on systemic symptoms and activity domains of the CLDQ in patients with AIH in remission. Patients with AIH in remission show impaired HRQOL associated with disease duration.
