Increased concentrations of plasma neuropeptide Y in patients with eclampsia and preeclampsia.
Epinephrine and norepinephrine are associated with the hyperstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. Neuropeptide Y is a potent vasoconstrictive substance that is released in response to sympathetic nerve stimulation. ⋯ We have concluded that the level of neuropeptide Y in plasma is increased in women with eclampsia and preeclampsia. Elevated plasma neuropeptide Y levels may play a key role in the development of eclampsia and preeclampsia.

The goal of this study was to determine whether a urine two-glass test or a leucocyte esterase (LE) test of first-void urine (FVU) improve the sensitivity or specificity of the World Health Organization (WHO) algorithm for the syndromic management of men with urethritis in southern Thailand. A secondary aim was to determine whether infection with Trichomonas vaginalis was sufficiently common to include treatment for it in a syndromic management protocol. One hundred and twenty-nine men with symptoms of urethritis seen at 2 STD clinics in Songkla Province, Thailand were enrolled. ⋯ Our analysis demonstrates that neither the two-glass test nor the LE test of FVU were useful in improving on the WHO algorithm for management of men with urethritis. T. vaginalis was not common enough to include in a first-line syndromic management protocol for male urethritis. We recommend that, in southern Thailand, men with symptoms of urethritis in whom a urethral discharge is present on examination be offered immediate treatment for both N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis as per the WHO algorithm.

Effect of phenobarbital on seizure frequency and mortality in childhood cerebral malaria: a randomised, controlled intervention study.
Seizures commonly complicate cerebral malaria and are associated with an increased risk of death and neurological sequelae. We undertook a randomised study to assess the efficacy of intramuscular phenobarbital in preventing seizures in childhood cerebral malaria. ⋯ In children with cerebral malaria, phenobarbital 20 mg/kg provides highly effective seizure prophylaxis but is associated with an unacceptable increase in mortality. Use of this dose cannot, therefore, be recommended.

Cancer of the uterine cervix is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women worldwide. The estimated new cancer cervix cases per year is 500,000 of which 79% occur in the developing countries. Cancer cervix occupies either the top rank or second among cancers in women in the developing countries, whereas in the affluent countries cancer cervix does not even find a place in the top 5 leading cancers in women. ⋯ The accumulated evidence suggests that cervical cancer is preventable and is highly suitable for primary prevention. Sexual hygiene, use of barrier contraceptives and ritual circumcision can undoubtedly reduce cervical cancer incidence. Education, cervical cancer screening of high risk groups and improvement in socio-economic status can reduce cervical cancer morbidity and mortality significantly.
