Identifying and tackling the factors that undermine regulation of unhealthy commodities is an essential component of effective noncommunicable disease (NCD) prevention. Unhealthy commodity producers may use rules in US and EU Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to challenge policies targeting their products. We aimed to test whether there was a statistical relationship between US and EU FTA participation and reduced implementation of WHO-recommended policies. ⋯ US and EU FTA participation may reduce the probability of implementing WHO-recommended tobacco and child food marketing policies by between a quarter and a half-depending on the FTA and outcome in question. Governments negotiating or participating in US/EU FTAs may need to establish robust health protections and mitigation strategies to achieve their NCD mortality reduction targets.

The study presents associations between prevalence of chronic diseases and selected socio-economic (SES) attributes in adult population of Slovakia and analyses the prevalence of chronic diseases in regions of Slovakia. ⋯ The study did not confirm a higher prevalence of chronic diseases in regions with weaker SES in Slovakia. Out of the 4 monitored SES attributes, 3 of them (age, education and lifestyle) had a significant impact on the prevalence of chronic diseases. Household income showed only a minimal association with the prevalence of chronic diseases, but this interdependence was not significant (Tab. 6, Ref. 41). Is Homocysteine Associated with the Prognosis of Covid-19 Pneumonia.
Background/Aim. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a life-threatening disease characterized by a prothrombotic state. Because homocysteine (Hcy) is a potential biomarker in thrombotic disease, this article aims to highlight the role of Hcy in the prognosis of COVID-19 pneumonia. ⋯ Our study supports previous studies and shows the association between the need for intensive care and high Hcy levels. Conclusion. A high Hcy value is a helpful marker in determining the need for critical care on admission to the emergency department and a marker of poor prognosis in COVID-19 pneumonia.

Sepsis is the second most common cause of death in patients with non-cardiovascular diseases admitted to the ICU. It is one of the top ten reasons for death among all hospitalized patients. This study aimed to compare the value of some blood parameters in diagnosing sepsis and investigate their relationship to select a more practical diagnostic method. ⋯ Clinically, accurate detection of sepsis and predicting the patients at risk of developing sepsis is useful for improving treatment. Given the significant differences between HR, O2Sat, and SBP between normal and sepsis patients in this study, it may be possible to use these tests as simple tests instead of the complement protein 3 (C3) and Procalcitonin (PCT) tests to diagnose sepsis in the ICU (Tab. 8, Fig. 10, Ref. 39). Abnormal kidney ultrasound and function in a five-year-old boy born prematurely with a birth weight of 370 grams.
It is known that prematurity and low birth weight are associated with chronic kidney disease and hypertension. A positive correlation between kidney volume and birth weight was also described. ⋯ We believe that thorough follow up and timely diagnosis of developing renal insufficiency may help us to initiate proper treatment in high-risk children (Tab. 1, Fig. 1, Ref. 7).
