Burden and determinants of renal dysfunction and in-hospital mortality among acute stroke patients in Ethiopia: A hospital-based observational study.
Stroke, a leading global cause of mortality and neurological impairment, is often complicated by renal failure, exacerbating in-hospital risks and mortality. Limited understanding exists regarding renal failure prevalence in Ethiopian acute stroke patients. This study examines renal function abnormalities in acute stroke patients at Jimma Medical Center (JMC). ⋯ Renal function abnormalities were prevalent among hospitalized acute stroke patients, emphasizing the significance of renal dysfunction as a frequent comorbidity. Older age, hypertension, DM, cardiac disease, history of TIA/stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke type emerged as statistically significant predictors of renal dysfunction. Furthermore, renal dysfunction was identified as a significant predictor of in-hospital mortality following stroke.

Omalizumab in the treatment of bullous pemphigoid: A single-center series of 15 cases.
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the elderly population and characterized by the formation of subepidermal tense bullae. Treatment options include topical steroids, systemic steroids, immunosuppressants, and antimicrobials, and there is emerging evidence of the efficacy of omalizumab. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate omalizumab's efficacy for treating BP, and we also reported treatment-related adverse events. ⋯ Omalizumab resulted in a decrease in BP Disease Area Index activity score of 80.8 (95% confidence interval 71.8-89.8, P < .001). Also, omalizumab caused significant decline in IgE levels compared to baseline (1102.5 ± 834.5 vs 834.6 ± 613.6, P = .002). In this study, omalizumab treatment was an effective and safe option in BP patients with high baseline IgE levels who are refractory to or cannot tolerate other immunosuppressive therapies.

In recent years, osteoarthritis of the knee, a common degenerative joint disease, often occurs in the elderly population. This disease has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients. For treating knee osteoarthritis, physical therapy is highly regarded as a very effective treatment method. ⋯ The goal is to help a large number of patients effectively alleviate the discomfort caused by knee osteoarthritis, enhance the clinical therapeutic effects, and introduce home treatment methods to reduce financial burdens. The article also compares various physical therapy methods and finds that moxibustion and electrotherapy are more suitable for home use. Other treatment methods provide a reliable scientific basis for patient treatment.

Femoral head necrosis is a common refractory disease in orthopedics, and shows a trend of getting younger. The occurrence of femoral head necrosis in adolescents is related to the use of glucocorticoids, autoimmune diseases, trauma, and other factors. ⋯ Early artificial joint replacement may have problems such as wear and loosening, so total hip replacement is not the preferred treatment for adolescent patients with femoral head necrosis. This article will elaborate the research progress of femoral head necrosis in adolescents from 3 aspects, and summarize the benefits and side effects of core decompression combined with autologous stem cell transplantation in the treatment of early femoral head necrosis, so as to provide clinical ideas for the treatment of femoral head necrosis in adolescents.

Patients' compliance and receptivity to nonimmersive virtual reality (NIVR) can enhance their long-term exercise therapy compliance for neurological illnesses. Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) have age-standardized rates of disability, death, and prevalence that are rising the fastest; several researches have revealed that there is no known cure for PD at this time. Thus, the current study investigates how NIVR affects patients with PD using Wii-Fit exercises. Therefore, the present study investigates the effects of NIVR using Wii-Fit exercises among patients with PD. ⋯ The review suggests that NIVR is effective for balance rehabilitation but ineffective for cognitive improvement in patients with PD aged >18 to 85 years.
