As 2 novel peripheral nerve blocks, the erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) block can relieve postoperative pain in spinal surgery. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of ESPB versus TLIP block in patients undergoing spine surgery. ⋯ ESPB and TLIP block are 2 novel and effective block methods. Patients receiving ESPB had lower postoperative opioid consumption and postoperative pain scores compared with patients receiving TLIP block; there was no statistically significant difference's between the 2 groups in intraoperative opioid consumption, adverse events, and rescue analgesia.

Randomized controlled trials indicate regional anesthesia (RA) improves postoperative outcomes with reduced pain and opioid consumption. Therefore, we hypothesized children who received RA, regardless of technique, would have reduced pain/opioid use in routine practice. ⋯ Despite adjustment for confounders, the association of RA with pediatric pain/opioid use outcomes was mixed. Further investigation is necessary to maximize the benefits of RA.

Effect of noise isolation using noise-cancelling headphones during laparoscopic surgery for postoperative pain reduction: A randomized clinical trial.
Most laparoscopic surgeries under general anesthesia are performed in noisy environments, although the effect of intraoperative noise reduction on postoperative pain remains uncertain. This study aimed to explore whether postoperative pain could be reduced through the intraoperative use of noise-cancelling headphones. ⋯ During laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia, intraoperative noise isolation using noise-cancelling headphones is a safe and effective strategy for relieving postoperative pain and decreasing total opioid analgesic consumption.

Knee osteoarthropathy is one of the most common degenerative joint diseases in the elderly, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most commonly used treatment for end-stage knee osteoarthropathy. Negative emotions such as anxiety have been extensively documented in knee osteoarthropathy patients. ⋯ This study showed that patients with anxiety may have an "Adjacent Bed Effect" on patients with TKA in the adjacent bed, which may be associated with poorer postoperative recovery, including pain and physical function. We speculate this phenomenon can be effectively avoided by the nursing team through accurately assessing psychological status and reasonable bed arrangements in the inpatient assessment phase.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Chronic Postsurgical Pain After Thoracic Surgery: A Prospective Cohort Study.
Thoracic surgery is associated with one of the highest rates of chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) among all surgical subtypes. Chronic postsurgical pain carries significant medical, psychological, and economic consequences, and further interventions are needed to prevent its development. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, characteristics, and risk factors associated with CPSP after thoracic surgery. ⋯ Approximately 1 in 3 patients will continue to have pain at 3 months after surgery, with a large proportion reporting neuropathic features. Risk factors for pain at 3 months may include preoperative anxiety and depression and acute postoperative pain.
