Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Effect of favorite music on postoperative anxiety and pain.
Music is one of the most commonly used non-pharmacological interventions to reduce anxiety. It helps patients overcome emotional and physical alienation, provides comfort and familiarity in an improved environment and offers a pleasant distraction from pain and anxiety. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of listening to preoperative favorite music on postoperative anxiety and pain. ⋯ Listening to patient-preferred favorite music preoperatively reduced anxiety, regulated hemodynamic parameters, and improved postoperative patient satisfaction. Reduced anxiety was not associated with reduced pain.

The demographics of persistent opioid consumption following limb amputation.
Patients who have limb amputation are at risk of chronic pain, including phantom limb pain that can be challenging to treat. The aim of this study was to describe the incidence of pre-operative opioid usage and the incidence and risk factors for new persistent post-operative opioid usage in opioid-naïve patients after limb amputation. ⋯ Opioid naïve patients undergoing major amputation had a 20% chance of having a persistent opioid requirement following surgery. This could represent new-onset phantom limb pain or other chronic pain. Our findings should encourage perioperative multimodal efforts to reduce the burden of chronic pain after limb amputations.

Epidural-Like Effects With Bilateral Erector Spinae Plane Catheters After Abdominal Surgery: A Case Report.
This case report highlights the potential for adverse effects with the erector spinae plane (ESP) blocks. ESP blocks are an alternative to the traditional epidural and paravertebral block for postoperative analgesia due to their relative technical ease and seemingly safer profile. To date, few complications have been reported from ESP blocks or catheters. Despite its distance from the epidural space, epidural-like effects may still occur with ESP catheters, such as hypotension and motor blockade, as observed in this patient after abdominal surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialSerratus plane block for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery major lung resection: a randomized controlled trial.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of 2 different analgesic approaches on pain, postoperative rehabilitation exercises and rescue analgesics of 2 groups of patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) major lung resection for cancer. ⋯ NCT03134729.

A Multi-institutional Assessment of Multimodal Analgesia in Penile Implant Recipients Demonstrates Dramatic Reduction in Pain Scores and Narcotic Usage.
Despite the pain associated with inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) implantation, there has been a lack of standardized, nonopioid pain control regimens described to date. ⋯ The use of a MMA protocol significantly reduces postoperative pain measures in penile implant recipients and further reduces both inpatient and outpatient narcotic usage without any discernable side effects.
