Daily Physical Training Improved Coronal Imbalance of Adult Degenerative Scoliosis: A Case Report.
Background and Objectives: Adult (de novo) degenerative scoliosis (ADS) develops through degenerative changes in the lumbar spine, leading to spinal malalignment, which usually progresses with age. Strong evidence for non-operative care in patients with ADS is lacking, and whether physical exercise can improve the scoliosis curve remains unknown. Materials and Methods: We present a case of early stage ADS in which the coronal imbalance was improved by daily training. ⋯ Results: Her LBP and neurological symptoms improved, and coronal-spinal balance was restored, which was maintained for four years by continued daily physical training. Conclusions: This is the first case of a 65-year-old ADS patient whose coronal balance was significantly restored through daily physical training. Substantial physical training focused on trunk muscle strength is important for spinal stabilization and for improving spinal malalignment in patients with early stage ADS.

Background The relationship between overweight or obesity and low back pain (LBP) has previously been investigated. Several recent studies have focused on the relationship between other indicators of obesity, particularly indicators of fat and the risk of LBP. However, the results of body composition and LBP have been inconsistent. ⋯ In the multivariable analyses adjusting for age and sex, none of the variables, including fat mass and fat-free mass, remained positively or negatively associated with LBP. Additionally, when depression, smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, diabetes mellitus, and fat or lean tissue mass were included in the multivariable logistic model, no significant associations were found between all measures of fat mass, fat-free mass, and LBP Conclusion This study is contrary to previous studies that concluded that there is a correlation between obesity and fat mass and LBP. LBP is not associated with increased levels of obesity and fat mass.

The Biospecimen Collection and Processing Working Group of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) HEAL Initiative BACPAC Research Program was charged with identifying molecular biomarkers of interest to chronic low back pain (cLBP). Having identified biomarkers of interest, the Working Group worked with the New York University Grossman School of Medicine, Center for Biospecimen Research and Development-funded by the Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network Data Coordinating Center-to harmonize consortium-wide and site-specific efforts for biospecimen collection and analysis. ⋯ The omics data acquisition and analyses derived from the biospecimen include genomics and epigenetics from DNA, proteomics from protein, transcriptomics from RNA, and microbiomics from 16S rRNA. These analyses contribute to the overarching goal of BACPAC to phenotype cLBP and will guide future efforts for precision medicine treatment.

Evaluating the efficacy of moving cupping for chronic low back pain using shear wave elastography: A parallel-arm, randomized controlled trial.
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Moving cupping has gained popularity as a complementary therapy for managing CLBP owing to its noninvasive and cost-effective nature. However, the lack of objective measures to assess its therapeutic effect has been a considerable challenge in evaluating the effectiveness of moving cupping for CLBP management. ⋯ The protocol developed here utilizes SWE to objectively measure muscle stiffness, and coupled with moving cupping therapy, may be effective in conveying relative comparisons before and after treatment. Moving cupping therapy is expected to promote muscle relaxation and pain relief in patients with CLBP. This study has the potential to contribute to the development of objective measures for evaluating the therapeutic effects of traditional therapies and to provide valuable insight into their efficacy.
