Neuromuscular function in athletes following recovery from a recent acute low back injury.
Observational case control design. ⋯ These objective measures of neuromuscular function indicated an altered muscle response pattern to sudden trunk loading in athletes following their clinical recovery from a recent acute LBI.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialOne-shot percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation vs. transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for low back pain: comparison of therapeutic effects.
To investigate the therapeutic effects of one shot of low-frequency percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation one shot of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in patients with low back pain. ⋯ Simple one-shot treatment with percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation provided immediate pain relief for low back pain patients. One-shot transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation treatment is recommended due to the rarity of side effects and its convenient application.

Sleep in depressed and nondepressed participants with chronic low back pain: electroencephalographic and behaviour findings.
To study the nature of sleep disturbance in depressed and nondepressed patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). ⋯ Lower sigma power in participants with CLBP suggests less-effective sensorimotor gating that may contribute to poor sleep quality. Pain subgroup differences underscore the need to consider the influence of depression in the evaluation of sleep in clinical populations. This study controlled for many factors other than pain that may contribute to the sleep complaints in this population. Consequently, the absence of signs of major sleep disturbance must not be interpreted as evidence of a lack of a true sleep problem in CLBP but more likely reflects control of these factors as well as the difficulty in measuring sleep quality.

The relationship between resting blood pressure and acute pain sensitivity in healthy normotensives and chronic back pain sufferers: the effects of opioid blockade.
Resting blood pressure is inversely correlated with acute pain sensitivity in healthy normotensives. This study tested: (1) whether endogenous opioid activity is necessary for this adaptive relationship to occur, (2) whether this relationship is altered in chronic low back pain (LBP), and (3) whether endogenous opioid dysfunction underlies any such alterations. Fifty-one pain-free normotensives and 44 normotensive chronic LBP sufferers received opioid blockade (8 mg naloxone i.v.) or placebo blockade (saline) in randomized, counterbalanced order in separate sessions. ⋯ Opioid blockade exerted no significant main or interaction effects in these combined groups analyses (p values >0.10). Higher DBP was associated with greater clinical pain intensity among the LBP subjects (P<0.001). Overall, these results suggest: (1) endogenous opioids do not mediate the inverse relationship between resting blood pressure and acute pain sensitivity in pain-free normotensives; (2) the BP-pain sensitivity relationship is altered in chronic pain, suggesting dysfunction in pain regulatory systems, and (3) these alterations are not related to opioid dysfunction.

Temporal activation patterns from abdominal and lumbar muscles were compared between healthy control subjects and those with chronic low back pain. ⋯ These results provide a foundation for developing a diagnostic classifier of neuromuscular impairment associated with low back pain, that could be used to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions to improve muscle coactivation.
