MicroRNAs play an essential role in regulating pain processing within a wide range of clinical pain disorders. ⋯ In older adults with vitamin D deficiency, the severity of LBP was significantly associated with the expression of circulating miRNAs, adiposity, bone metabolism, inflammation, and muscle performance. In addition, the expressed miRNAs, along with other LBP cofounders, were significantly associated with ∼63.9-86.4% of the incidence of LBP in older adults. These results suggest the possibility of using microRNAs as therapeutics to alleviate established pain and as biomarkers in old adults with painful conditions.

Low back pain is one of the major occupational health problems ranked the highest in terms of years lived with disability, and it has an economic burden on individuals and society in general. Hairdressers are high-risk professionals, but they are usually getting less attention in research and policy actions. The objective of this study is to assess the magnitude and associated factors of low back pain among hairdressers working in female beauty salons of Mekelle, Northern Ethiopia. ⋯ This study found that low back pain is a major health problem among hairdressers. Marital status, awkward postures, working days per week, the task of washing the client's hair, adjustable washing basin, job stress, and job satisfaction show a strong association with low back pain. The result suggests that effective intervention strategies for low back pain need to include ergonomic improvements and psychosocial and behavioral aspects of the participants.

Greater Conditioned Pain Modulation Is Associated With Enhanced Morphine Analgesia in Healthy Individuals and Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain.
Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) protocols index magnitude of descending pain inhibition. This study evaluated whether the degree of CPM, controlling for CPM expectancy confounds, was associated with analgesic and subjective responses to morphine and whether chronic pain status or sex moderated these effects. ⋯ Results suggest that CPM might predict analgesic and subjective responses to opioid administration. Further evaluation of CPM as an element of precision pain medicine algorithms may be warranted.

A systematic survey of the symptoms of back pain in terms of the triggering event and onset, nature of the pain and the extent to which pain dynamics can be influenced (lying or standing, under stress, nocturnal pain, localized percussion tenderness, B symptoms, etc.), as well as a structured clinical examination (segment height, radiance, projection, reflex status, sensitivity, and motor function), allows an initial and therefore orienting classification of back pain as non-specific or specific. Thus, in the primary care setting, many patients can be treated extremely effectively and economically from a cost perspective. The more precise the initial findings are, the more effective the measures taken are in general. ⋯ In addition to non-pharmacological measures (initial rest and starting home exercises early on, promoting everyday mobility, physiotherapy, manual therapy, etc.), a wide range of pharmacological treatment alternatives is available. In the further course of treatment, it may be necessary to consult medical specialists in the fields of radiology, orthopedics, neurology, neurosurgery, rheumatology, psychotherapy, and psychiatry, among others. Treatment is managed by the primary care provider, who should also receive and re-evaluate all findings during the course of the disease.

Dermatomal somatosensory evoked potentials (DSEPs) are used to evaluate abnormalities of the somatosensory tract. There have been some studies on the diagnostic value of DSEP in radiculopathy, but it is still controversial. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the diagnostic implication and clinical relevance of DSEPs in patients with radiculopathy by comparing DSEP findings to radiculopathy symptoms and intervertebral foramen (IVF) or spinal canal stenosis in lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). ⋯ This paper could be helpful in the electrophysiologic diagnosis of lumbar radiculopathy.
