Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Relative cost-effectiveness of extensive and light multidisciplinary treatment programs versus treatment as usual for patients with chronic low back pain on long-term sick leave: randomized controlled study.
A subgroup of 195 patients with chronic low back pain, being part of a larger study of other musculoskeletal patients, were included in a randomized controlled prospective clinical study. ⋯ The light multidisciplinary treatment model is a cost-effective treatment for men with chronic low back pain.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Discriminative and predictive validity assessment of the quebec task force classification.
A prospective cohort study of workers with low back pain who had been absent from work for more than 4 weeks was conducted. ⋯ The Quebec Task Force Classification demonstrated good predictive ability by discriminating between subjects with and those without distal radiating pain.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Acupuncture treatment of chronic low-back pain -- a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial with 9-month follow-up.
There is some evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture in chronic low-back pain (LBP), but it remains unclear whether acupuncture is superior to placebo. In a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial, we evaluated the effect of traditional acupuncture in chronic LBP. A total of 131 consecutive out-patients of the Department of Orthopaedics, University Goettingen, Germany, (age=48.1 years, 58.5% female, duration of pain: 9.6 years) with non-radiating LBP for at least 6 months and a normal neurological examination were randomized to one of three groups over 12 weeks. ⋯ At 9-month follow-up, the superiority of acupuncture compared to the control condition became less and acupuncture was not different to sham-acupuncture. We found a significant improvement by traditional acupuncture in chronic LBP compared to routine care (physiotherapy) but not compared to sham-acupuncture. The trial demonstrated a placebo effect of traditional acupuncture in chronic LBP.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialLong-term effectiveness of bone-setting, light exercise therapy, and physiotherapy for prolonged back pain: a randomized controlled trial.
Chiropractic manipulation and strenuous exercise therapy have been shown effective in the treatment of nonspecific back pain. Bone-setting, the predecessor of modern manual therapies, still survives in some parts of Finland and was compared with a light exercise therapy and non-manipulative, pragmatic physiotherapy in a year-long randomized controlled trial on patients with long-term back pain. ⋯ Traditional bone-setting seemed more effective than exercise or physiotherapy on back pain and disability, even 1 year after therapy.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialDescription and validation of a noninvasive placebo acupuncture procedure.
To evaluate a simulated acupuncture technique for use in randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of acupuncture for low-back pain. ⋯ The simulated acupuncture procedure evaluated in this study represents a reasonable control treatment for acupuncture-naïve individuals in randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of acupuncture for low-back pain.
