Research on social disparities in pain care has been mainly focused on the role of race/racism and sex/sexism. Classism in pain assessment and management practices has been much less investigated. We aimed to test the effect of patient socioeconomic status (SES; a proxy of social class) on nurses' pain assessment and management practices and whether patient SES modulated the effects of patient distress and evidence of pathology on such practices. ⋯ Our findings point to the potential buffering role of SES against the detrimental effect of certain clinical cues on pain assessments. This study contributes to highlighting the need for further investigation of the role of SES/social class on pain care and its underlying meanings and processes.

Pain severity and prescription opioid misuse among individuals with chronic pain: The moderating role of alcohol use severity.
Chronic pain is a public health problem associated with opioid misuse. Yet, it is important to understand factors underlying opioid misuse in the context of pain. Alcohol use is one factor to consider given past work documenting use of alcohol to manage pain. However, it is unknown whether alcohol use severity exacerbates the relation between pain and opioid misuse. This study sought to examine relations between pain and prescription opioid misuse and the moderating role of alcohol use severity in two online survey studies of individuals with chronic pain. ⋯ In two online samples, there was evidence of a novel interaction of pain severity and alcohol use severity in relation to opioid misuse. Although cross-sectional, results replicated in two studies. Pain severity was related to opioid misuse among those with higher but not lower alcohol use. Those who use alcohol, even below suggested cut-offs, may be more likely to misuse opioids when in pain.

Cancer pain is a pervasive clinical symptom impairing life quality. Vascular endothelial growth factor A has been well studied in tumor angiogenesis and is recognized as a therapeutic target for anti-cancer treatment. This study tested the hypothesis that vascular endothelial growth factor A and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 contribute to bone cancer pain regulation associated with spinal central sensitization. ⋯ Vascular endothelial growth factor A/vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 contributes to central sensitization and bone cancer pain via activation of neuronal protein kinase C and microglial Src family kinase pathways in the spinal cord.

Decompression surgery is the standard treatment in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Recent studies have shown that patient satisfaction following decompression surgery does not correspond well with outcomes measured by conventional patient-reported outcome measurements. Recent study reported that the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Back Pain Evaluation Questionnaire (JOABPEQ) is the most accurate outcome measurement to reflect patient satisfaction. ⋯ Using the anchor-based method, the MCIDs were determined to be 28.5, 16.5, 25.0, 21.5, and 14.5, respectively. The MCIDs of the JOABPEQ in LSS were slightly different from 20-point, which was proposed in the JOABPEQ user's manual. Our findings should be considered when evaluating LSS patients undergoing decompression surgery as JOABPEQ is not LSS specific.

The psychosocial factors that may affect the prognosis of patients with low back pain are generally disregarded. The StarT Back Screening Tool can help clinicians to analyze prognostic indicators and the risk associated with outcome by examining physical and psychosocial factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the StarT Back Screening Tool, including cross-cultural adaptation, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity. ⋯ The Turkish version of the StarT Screening Tool for non-specific back pain was determined to be valid and reliable. A good assessment of both physical and psychosocial factors in symptomatic patients can help clinicians make a thorough prognosis.
