Efficacy and safety of intravenous immunoglobulin as adjuvant treatment for refractory neuropathic pain. Results of an open-label, multicenter study.
Neuropathic pain is frequently associated with many peripheral nervous system diseases and its successful treatment is an area of significant and critical unmet need. ⋯ This unblinded pilot study showed a beneficial effect of IVIG on neuropathic pain intensity and quality of life in patients resistant to conventional treatments.

The pain quality response profile of pregabalin in the treatment of neuropathic pain.
To identify and describe the response profile of pregabalin on the qualities of pain associated with peripheral neuropathy. ⋯ Pregabalin had a greater effect on PQAS-assessed paroxysmal pain than on surface or deep pain in patients with peripheral neuropathy. The findings corroborate previous research demonstrating differential effects of analgesic drugs across pain qualities, further emphasizing the need to assess individual pain qualities in addition to overall pain intensity.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy attenuates neuropathic hyperalgesia in rats and idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia in patients.
Neuropathic pain after nerve injury is severe and intractable, and current drug and non-drug therapies offer very limited pain relief. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO 2) has been clinically used for protection of the nervous system after acute injury. We investigated whether HBO 2 treatment could prevent and/or attenuate neuropathic pain in animals and in patients. ⋯ These findings support that HBO 2 therapy is an effective approach for treating neuropathic pain in both animals and human beings and suggest that neural protection, anti-inflammation and inhibition of nerve injury-induced altered neural activity may contribute to the analgesic effect of HBO 2 therapy.

Early pain reduction can predict treatment response: results of integrated efficacy analyses of a once-daily gastroretentive formulation of gabapentin in patients with postherpetic neuralgia.
The objectives of this study were to identify and determine the validity of early decision criteria following once-daily gastroretentive gabapentin (G-GR) treatment in patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). ⋯ Early response was a reliable predictor of final response. This approach holds promise for aiding clinicians in decision making regarding the need for alternative or supplemental treatment during G-GR therapy for PHN.

[Long-term effects of pulsed radiofrequency on the dorsal root ganglion and segmental nerve roots for lumbosacral radicular pain: a prospective controlled randomized trial with nerve root block].
Although pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) method for lumbosacral radicular pain (LSRP) is reportedly effective, there are no prospective controlled trials. We assessed the long-term efficacy of PRF of the dorsal root ganglion and nerve roots for LSRP as compared with nerve root block (RB). ⋯ This study indicates that PRF adjacent to the dorsal root ganglion and nerve roots for LSRP has long-term effects. There were no significant differences of long-term effects between the two groups.
