Herpes zoster (HZ) is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus reactivation, often leading to peripheral nervous system infection and pain. This case report aimed to present 2 patients with damaged sensory nerves originating from the visceral neurons of the lateral horn of the spinal cord. ⋯ Herpetic visceral neuralgia can be easily misdiagnosed due to the absence of a rash or herpes, resulting in delayed treatment. When patients have severe, intractable pain but no rash or herpes, and the biochemical and imaging examinations are normal, the treatment method for HZ neuralgia can be used. If the treatment is effective, HZ neuralgia is diagnosed. If not, shingles neuralgia can be ruled out. Further investigations are required to elucidate the mechanisms of pathophysiological changes in varicella-zoster virus-induced peripheral HZ neuralgia or visceral neuralgia without herpes.

Prevalence and risk factors of significant persistent pain symptoms after critical care illness: a prospective multicentric study.
Prevalence, risk factors and medical management of persistent pain symptoms after critical care illness have not been thoroughly investigated. ⋯ Persistent pain symptoms were frequent in critical illness survivors and specialized management remained infrequent. Innovative approaches must be developed in the ICU to minimize the consequences of pain.

Treatment of Ulnar Neuropathic Pain with Peripheral Nerve Stimulation: Two Case Reports.
Ulnar neuropathy is a condition that manifests with symptoms of neuropathic pain, numbness, tingling, and even possible motor deficits in the ulnar distribution of the arm. This debilitating painful condition may be refractory to conservative, pharmacologic, and surgical interventions. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) technology has advanced significantly in recent years allowing for conditions such as ulnar neuropathy to be treated in a minimally invasive manner. ⋯ The patients also experienced significant improvement in functional outcomes, including return to employment, ability to perform activities of daily living without any impairment, and improved quality of life measures. While the results presented in our two case reports are promising, we only provide observational data over a 6 to 15-month period post-implantation. Future well-powered, large-scale, and long-term randomized controlled trials are warranted to determine efficacy and long-term pain and functional outcomes from PNS therapy for treatment of ulnar neuropathy.

The increased presence of senescent cells in different neurological diseases suggests the contribution of senescence in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders. Microglia can adapt to any type of disturbance of the homeostasis of the central nervous system, and its altered activity can lead to permanent and unresolvable damage. The aim of this work was to characterize the behavioural phenotype of spared nerve injury mice and then associate it with senescence-related mechanisms. ⋯ These markers were unaltered at previous time points. In murine immortalized microglial cells (BV2) stimulated with LPS 500 ng/mL for 10 days (4 hours/day) every other day, we observed an increase of β-galactosidase and senescent-associated secretory phenotype appearance, a reduction of cell viability, and an increase of senescence-associated heterochromatin foci. Therefore, present findings could represent an important step to a better understanding of the pathophysiological cellular mechanisms in comorbidities related to neuropathic pain states.

Brachial plexus avulsion injuries result in permanent motor and sensory deficits, leading to debilitating symptoms. We report the case of a 25-year-old man with chronic pain following right-sided C5-T1 nerve root avulsion without evidence of peripheral nerve injury. ⋯ These results agree with data suggesting collateral sprouting of sensory nerves occurs following a brachial plexus injury. Further study is needed if we are to understand the mechanisms of the peripheral nerve stimulator as a treatment option.
