Sciatic nerve block with bupivacaine-loaded microspheres prevents hyperalgesia in an inflammatory animal model.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different durations of local anesthetic neural blockade on hyperalgesia after carrageenan infiltration in a rat model. ⋯ B-Ms as a drug delivery system prolongs the duration of neural blockade and avoids hyperalgesia phenomena in this rat model of inflammation.

Case ReportsComplex Regional Pain Syndrome in the ambulatory surgical care setting.
This article provides an historical synopsis from the 17th century to the present regarding the disease process known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Type I. An overview of the disease symptoms, plausible theories, and a review of the pain cycle, relief measures, and a case scenario are reported. The focus of pain blockade was chosen because this was the intervention used in this particular case. The author presents the holistic standpoint of the importance of incorporating complementary alternative medical practices (CAMP) to enhance a positive outcome for this client. ⋯ -Based on the content of this article, the reader should be able to (1) distinguish the main characteristic between CRPS Type I (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) and CRPS Type II (causalgia); (2) identify symptoms related to CRPS Type I; and (3) identify the stages of CRPS and state potential interventions used in the treatment of CRPS Type I.

Plasma concentration of ropivacaine after intercostal blocks for video-assisted thoracic surgery.
Absorption of local anaesthetics following intercostal blocks is rapid. Therefore, plasma concentrations of ropivacaine during intercostal blocks with ropivacaine 2, 5, 7.5 and 10 mg ml-1 (ropivacaine 5 ml injected into each of four intercostal spaces) in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracic surgery were determined. ⋯ After intercostal blocks the absorption of ropivacaine is rapid compared with other techniques for regional anaesthesia and results in relatively high venous and arterial plasma concentrations, especially if a dose of 100 mg or more is used.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial[Efficacy of 1% ropivacaine with and without hyaluronidase for peribulbar block].
To determine whether adding hyaluronidase to 1% ropivacaine without adrenalin enhances peribulbar anesthesia for cataract surgery with phacoemulsification. ⋯ The greater efficacy of a peribulbar block with the addition of 10 U/mL of hyaluronidase to 1% ropivacaine without adrenalin, in comparison to 1% ropivacaine alone, was demonstrated by a lower rate of reinjection and ocular mobility, even though no statistically significant difference in either ocular or palpebral akinesia was found.
