Tracheal Intubation by Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in Pediatric Critical Care: Retrospective Study From the National Emergency Airway for Children Registry (2015-2019).
To describe tracheal intubation (TI) practice by Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in North American PICUs, including rates of TI-associated events (TIAEs) from 2015 to 2019. ⋯ TI performed by APRNs was associated with lower odds of first attempt success when compared with other ICU clinicians although there was no appreciable difference in procedural adverse events. There appears to be a positive relationship between experience and success rates. These data suggest there is an ongoing need for opportunities to build on TI competency with APRNs.

Randomized Controlled TrialUsefulness of an automatic cuff pressure controller (SmartCuff) in inhibiting gasleakage around the cuff after tracheal intubation: a randomized controlled study.
Gas leakage around the cuff of a tracheal tube may frequently occur after tracheal intubation and inflation of the cuff. We assessed if the SmartCuff (Smiths Medical Japan, Tokyo, Japan), an automatic cuff pressure controller, would effectively prevent gas leakage. ⋯ Gas leakage may frequently occur after tracheal intubation, and the use of the SmartCuff can effectively maintain the sealing effect of the cuff.

Factors associated with 30- and 90-day mortality in intubations among critically ill patients.
Emergency intubations are commonly associated with adverse events when performed in critically ill patients. A detailed look at intubation factors and their association with procedural success and mortality has yet to be fully conducted. ⋯ Cardiovascular and respiratory instability were associated with increased 30- and 90-day mortality. Presence of an attending anesthesiologist was associated with a better survival following intubation outside operating room.

Determining optimal cuff volume for cuffed endotracheal tubes commonly used in pediatric patients: A prospective observational study.
To determine an optimal cuff inflation volume to achieve safe cuff pressure (20-25 cmH2O) in cuffed endotracheal tubes (ETTs) with an inner diameter of 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 mm, which are commonly used in pediatric anaesthesia clinical practice and to create a formula to determine the optimal cuff volume. ⋯ In this study, we suggested the optimal cuff volume to inflate the cuffs of ETTs 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5, which are frequently used in pediatric anaesthesia practice, in the appropriate cuff pressure range.ClinicalTrials.gov ref. no.: NCT04948359.
