Quantitative analysis of the distal, lateral, and posterior articular branches of the axillary nerve to the shoulder: implications for intervention.
The terminal sensory branches innervating the shoulder joint are potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of shoulder pain. This cadaveric study investigated in detail the anatomic pathway of the posterior terminal sensory branch of the axillary nerve (AN) and its relationship to nearby anatomic structures for applications, such as nerve block or ablation of the shoulder joint. ⋯ The terminal sensory branches of the AN consistently innervate the inferior and lateral aspects of the posterior humeral head and shoulder capsule. These nerves are easily accessible and would provide a practical target for nerve block or ablation to relieve shoulder pain without compromising motor integrity.

ReviewAcute pain management in trauma: anatomy, ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks and special considerations.
Pain is the most common complaint amongst trauma patients throughout the perioperative period. Multimodal analgesia is currently being regarded the mainstay, with regional anesthesia techniques constituting an integral part of it. ⋯ In this review, we set out to provide several examples of injuries, to elucidate the precise anatomy of fractured bones (osteotomes), and to elaborate on certain peripheral nerve blocks employed in pain management of trauma patients. Controversies/special considerations pertaining to peripheral nerve blocks also dictate thorough analysis: as such, acute compartment syndrome, acute peripheral nerve injuries, regional anesthesia in awake or anesthetized patients, continuous peripheral nerve blocks, positioning limitations and, finally, ultrasound imaging versus neurostimulation techniques are extensively reviewed.

Non-pharmacological interventions for acute pain management in patients with opioid abuse or opioid tolerance: a scoping review protocol.
The objective of this scoping review is to identify and map the evidence on non-pharmacological interventions for acute pain management in patients with opioid tolerance and opioid abuse. ⋯ PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, Europe PubMed Central, PsycINFO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and ClinicalTrials.gov will be searched, as well as sources of unpublished studies. After screening the titles and abstracts of identified citations, two independent reviewers will retrieve potentially relevant full-text studies, assess methodological quality and extract data. Data will be presented in diagrammatic or tabular form, and a qualitative thematic analysis will be undertaken. A narrative summary will accompany the tabulated results.

Sensorimotor cortical activity is altered in both the immediate acute and chronic stages of musculoskeletal pain. However, these changes are opposite, with decreased cortical activity reported in experimentally induced acute pain (lasting minutes to hours), and increased cortical activity in chronic, clinical pain (lasting >6 months). It is unknown whether sensorimotor cortical activity is altered in acute, clinical musculoskeletal pain (lasting <4 weeks). ⋯ However, individual variation was high, suggesting individual adaptation of cortical plasticity in acute pain. PERSPECTIVE: This is the first study to examine sensorimotor cortical activity in the acute stage of clinical LBP. This information is critical for understanding the neurophysiology of acute LBP.
