Characterizing respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, RSV infections deviated from a previously reliable epidemiologic pattern of presentation. To investigate whether this change in RSV seasonality resulted in a change in frequency and severity of RSV infections, this single center retrospective study compares demographic and hospital factors during RSV seasons before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ During the first three RSV seasons after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our pediatric emergency departments saw more RSV positive patients than in the last three seasons beforehand. These patients were significantly older and less likely to be admitted, which may be partly due to increased respiratory viral testing during the pandemic. However, shorter LOS and decreased intubations despite increased respiratory support among admitted patients may indicate a paradigm shift in emergency department and inpatient management of severe RSV infections, perhaps encouraged by practice changes and resource limitations due to COVID-19. This information may better guide institutions in predicting resource needs after large-scale infectious disease outbreaks in the future.

Clinical coding allows for structured and standardised recording of patients' electronic healthcare records. How clinical and non-clinical staff in general practice approach clinical coding is poorly understood. ⋯ This study demonstrates the complexity of clinical coding in primary care. Clinical and non-clinical staff spoke of systems that lacked intuitiveness, and the challenges of multimorbidity and time pressures when coding in clinical situations. These challenges are likely to be exacerbated in socioeconomically deprived areas, leading to underreporting of disease in these areas. Challenges of clinical coding may lead to implications for data quality, particularly the validity of research findings generated from studies reliant on clinical coding from primary care. There are also consequences for patient care. Participants cared about coding quality and wanted a better way of using coding. There is a need to explore technological and non-technological solutions, such as artificial intelligence, training, and education to unburden people using clinical coding in primary care.

Investigation of the rs7041 variable of vitamin D-connector protein gene relation with pancreatic involvement in patients with coronavirus disease 2019.
This study aims to examine whether the presence of mutation exists in the vitamin D-connector protein gene rs7041 variant of the pancreatitis table for patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019. ⋯ Coronavirus disease 2019 patients were determined that the rs7041 halves in the vitamin D-connector protein gene could be prone to pancreatitis formation. Different populations and work with more patient groups are needed to verify the results of the study.

Comparability of control and comparison groups in studies assessing long COVID.
Awareness of long coronavirus disease (COVID) began primarily through media and social media sources, which eventually led to the development of various definitions based on methodologies of varying quality. We sought to characterize comparison groups in long COVID studies and evaluate comparability of the different groups. ⋯ Long COVID studies in high-impact journals primarily examine symptoms and risk factors of long COVID; often lack an adequate comparison group and often do not control for potential confounders. Our results suggest that standardized definitions for long COVID, which are often based on data from uncontrolled and potentially biased studies, should be reviewed to ensure that they are based on objective data.
