The incidence of severe adverse events in children with SARS-CoV-2 undergoing anaesthesia has not been well established. We examined the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe perioperative adverse events in children. ⋯ In the largest cohort to date of paediatric patients undergoing general anaesthesia, SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with severe perioperative adverse events, but no children in the infected cohort died.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Observational StudyA tidal volume of 7 mL/kg PBW or higher may be safe for COVID-19 patients.
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has revived the debate on the optimal tidal volume during acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Some experts recommend 6 mL/kg of predicted body weight (PBW) for all patients, while others suggest 7-9 mL/kg PBW for those with compliance >50 mL/cmH2O. We investigated whether a tidal volume ≥ 7 ml/kg PBW may be safe in COVID-19 patients, particularly those with compliance >50 mL/cmH2O. ⋯ A tidal volume ≥ 7 (up to 9) mL/kg PBW was associated with lower ICU mortality in these COVID-19 patients, including those with compliance <40 mL/cmH2O. This finding should be interpreted cautiously due to the retrospective study design.

Pediatric firearm injuries and socioeconomic vulnerability before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pediatric firearm injuries disproportionately affect groups experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage. Firearm injuries increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the impact on communities by degree of socioeconomic disadvantage is unknown. We examined the association between socioeconomic vulnerability and change in pediatric firearm injuries before versus during the pandemic. ⋯ The increase in pediatric firearm injuries during the COVID-19 pandemic impacted youth in all but the lowest deprivation quartile. Efforts at curbing gun violence should identify and amplify protective effects in under-resourced communities.

The effects of the 2022 computed tomography IV contrast shortage on the emergency department diagnosis of abdominal pathology.
A COVID-19 lockdown in China resulted in a global disruption in IV contrast media production, which resulted in a hospital system advisory limiting contrast studies. The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of the IV contrast shortage on the ED diagnosis of emergent abdominopelvic pathology. ⋯ We did not identify differences in diagnoses during the contrast shortage period compared to the control period, and did not identify any missed important diagnoses as a consequence of the IV contrast shortage.

Multicenter StudyLong-term recovery in critically ill COVID-19 survivors: A prospective cohort study.
Long-term recovery following critical COVID-19 has not been sufficiently studied. ⋯ Survivors of critical COVID-19 showed improved functional outcome and physical HRQoL from 3 to 12 months post-ICU. A shorter duration of mechanical ventilation is associated with good functional outcome and good HRQoL, while older age is associated with good functional outcome. Younger patients and those with comorbidities or higher frailty may require targeted follow-up and rehabilitation.
