Thrombosis-Related Loss of Arterial Lines in the First Wave of COVID-19 and Non-COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit Patients.
Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can present with severe respiratory distress requiring intensive care unit (ICU)-level care. Such care often requires placement of an arterial line for monitoring of pulmonary disease progression, hemodynamics, and laboratory tests. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, experienced physicians anecdotally reported multiple attempts, decreased insertion durations, and greater need for replacement of arterial lines in patients with COVID-19 due to persistent thrombosis. Because invasive procedures in patients with COVID-19 may increase the risk for caregiver infection, better defining difficulties in maintaining arterial lines in COVID-19 patients is important. We sought to explore the association between COVID-19 infection and arterial line thrombosis in critically ill patients. ⋯ Our study suggests that arterial line complications due to thrombosis are more likely in COVID-19 patients and supports the need for further research on the association between COVID-19 and arterial line dysfunction requiring replacement.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of Humulus lupulus L. (Hop) on Postmenopausal Sexual Dysfunction: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
Female sexual dysfunction is a common distressing problem among women, which may result from reducing circulating endogenous estrogen. Humulus lupulus L. (hop) has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and estrogenic properties. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the efficacy of hop on postmenopausal sexual dysfunction. ⋯ Vaginal hop was as effective as estradiol in improving the sexual dysfunction among postmenopausal women with no adverse events. Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 is the functional receptor that the SARS-Cov-2 virus requires to enter cells and cause dysregulated inflammatory conditions that contribute towards acute lung injuries. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system with its physiological surveillance and regulation system can be implicated in both harm and therapeutic benefit. ⋯ Understanding the biological plausibility of this pathway alongside the emerging therapeutic evidence may yield new modes of treatment. Such developments appear fundamentally important in the battle against the inevitable emergence of new variants and their potential to drive future waves of COVID-19 pandemics.

Abnormal kidney ultrasound and function in a five-year-old boy born prematurely with a birth weight of 370 grams.
It is known that prematurity and low birth weight are associated with chronic kidney disease and hypertension. A positive correlation between kidney volume and birth weight was also described. ⋯ We believe that thorough follow up and timely diagnosis of developing renal insufficiency may help us to initiate proper treatment in high-risk children (Tab. 1, Fig. 1, Ref. 7).
