Children admitted to the hospital experience pain. ChildKind International (CKI) is an organization dedicated to improving the quality of pediatric pain care worldwide. In 2019, BC Children hospital (BCCH) clinicians set out to achieve this certification. A qualitative study was performed in order to fully comprehend the current state of pain assessment and management at BCCH. ⋯ Pain management and treatment of children in the hospital remain inconsistent and inadequate. ChildKind certification will help hospitals to address this gap in their clinical practice.

The volar locking plates have been widely used in a variety of distal radius fractures, but they still have several limitations when dealing with small fragments located around the watershed line with widely reported complications. The volar rim fragments play a critical role in radiocarpal joint stability and failing to secure the volar rim fragment usually results in carpal instability, subluxation, or even dislocation. This study investigates clinical outcomes in the use of a novel implant, the Trident distal radial (TDR) locking plate to treat distal radius fracture with the intermedium column edge (lunate fossa volar rim) fragment involvement. ⋯ We believe that the TDR provided more stable fixation among distal radial fractures that predominantly involved the intermedial column and volar rim fragment, and allowing early rehabilitation. We could obtain excellent results in the wrist ROM, gripping power, and Pain Score (VAS).

Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a common problem among women. It is defined as any degree of perceived cramping pain during menstruation without any evident pathology. Auricular therapy (AT), a widely used alternative medical treatment method as part of traditional Chinese acupuncture, lacks reliable evidence to support its safety and effectiveness for PD. We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy and safety of AT in PD and to investigate possible factors impacting the particular efficacy of AT in PD by meta-regression. ⋯ This systematic evaluation will objectively and systematically assess the efficacy and safety of AT in PD based on the available evidence, as well as provides clinicians with evidence to support the treatment of the disease.

This review aimed to verify the clinical effects of traditional Chinese medicine in collaboration with conservative conventional medicine for lumbar herniated intervertebral discs (LHIVD). ⋯ Traditional Chinese medicine in collaboration with conservative conventional medicine can be used to relieve pain and facilitate better function of the lumbar spine in lumbar herniated intervertebral disc cases. However, this conclusion should be applied with caution in clinical practice owing to the low quality of the included studies.

ReviewHigh-dose opioids for chronic non-cancer pain: an overview of Cochrane Reviews.
This overview was originally published in 2017, and is being updated in 2022. Chronic pain is typically described as pain on most days for at least three months. Chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) is any chronic pain that is not due to a malignancy. Chronic non-cancer pain in adults is a common and complex clinical issue, for which opioids are prescribed by some physicians for pain management. There are concerns that the use of high doses of opioids for CNCP lacks evidence of effectiveness, and may increase the risk of adverse events. ⋯ There is a critical lack of high-quality evidence, in the form of Cochrane Reviews, about how well high-dose opioids work for the management of CNCP in adults, and regarding the presence and severity of adverse events. No evidence-based argument can be made on the use of high-dose opioids, i.e. 200 mg morphine equivalent or more daily, in clinical practice. Considering that high-dose opioids have been, and are still being used in clinical practice to treat CNCP, knowing about the efficacy and safety of these higher doses is imperative.
