Human epidemiological studies suggest that chronic pain can increase mortality risk. We investigated whether this was true in mice so that underlying mechanisms might be identified. At 10 weeks of age, C57BL/6 mice of both sexes received sham or spared nerve injury (SNI) surgery producing neuropathic pain. ⋯ However, in male mice with SNI, we observe a significant correlation between average lifetime mechanical hypersensitivity and lifespan, such that death occurred sooner in male mice exhibiting more evidence of chronic pain. This relationship was not observed in female SNI mice nor in sham-operated mice of either sex. This experiment is the first to investigate pain behavior over an entire adult lifetime and suggests that biology of relevance to human chronic pain is being ignored by the very short timespans of most extant preclinical pain research.

Anatomical and Radiological Assessments of Injectate Spread Stratified by the Volume of the Pericapsular Nerve Group Block.
The pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block was recently suggested as a regional technique for managing acute pain after hip surgery. However, few anatomical studies have confirmed the spread of injectate during the PENG block. This cadaver study aimed to analyze injectate spread to the target nerves during single-injection ultrasound-guided PENG block. ⋯ After combining the dissection and radiological findings, the single-injection ultrasound-guided PENG blocks with volumes of 10, 20, and 30 mL do not support motor sparing or selective anterior hip capsule innervation in a clinical setting. If early rehabilitation is needed, high-volume PENG block might not be the ideal option, and persisting pain after PENG block might be attributed in part to the lack of obturator nerve articular branches blockade.

The thermal grill illusion of pain (TGIP) is a paradoxical burning pain sensation elicited by the simultaneous application of innocuous cutaneous warm and cold stimuli with a thermode ("thermal grill") consisting of interlaced heated and cooled bars. Its neurophysiological mechanisms are unclear, but TGIP may have some mechanisms in common with pathological pain, including central sensitization in particular, through the involvement of N-methyl- d -aspartate receptors. However, few studies have investigated TGIP in patients with chronic pain and its clinical relevance is uncertain. ⋯ The percentage of TGIP responses and the intensity and unpleasantness of TGIP were significantly greater in patients than controls. Furthermore, positive correlations were found between TGIP intensity and clinical pain intensity and between TGIP intensity and the cold pain threshold measured on the hand. These results are consistent with our working hypothesis of shared mechanisms between TGIP and clinical pain mechanisms in patients with nociplastic chronic pain syndromes and suggest that TGIP might represent a clinical marker of central sensitization in these patients.

Multiple cholesterol granulomas of the breast: A case report and review of the literature.
Cholesterol granuloma of the breast is a rare disease defined as chronic reactive inflammation of cholesterol crystals and foreign body giant cells. This disease can mimic breast cancer in the clinic as painless palpable hard nodules, and imaging shows irregular hypoechoic nodules with unclear boundaries. Therefore, the uncommon lesions can be easily misdiagnosed as breast cancer. Meanwhile, it can be easily neglected by clinicians because of poor understanding. ⋯ By retrospective analysis, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and core needle biopsy can synergistically help clinicians distinguish it from other breast disease. To raise awareness of such a rare disease and reduce related misdiagnoses, we summarize the characteristics of cholesterol granulomas and recommend appropriate novel diagnosis and treatment regimens for patients with cholesterol granulomas.
