Randomized trial protocol of interscalene nerve block vs liposomal bupivacaine injection after total shoulder arthroplasty.
The possibility of local infiltration analgesia (LIA) replacing interscalene blockade (ISB) as an integral component of a multimodal clinical pathway for total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) needs to be further investigated. We thus further designed a randomized controlled study to compare LIA with ISB in the treatment of TSA. ⋯ For the present trial, we hypothesized that there would be no difference in pain score levels and opioid medication use throughout admission.

A 12 week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial for the evaluation of the efficacy and safety of HT083 on mild osteoarthritis.
The increasing prevalence of osteoarthritis among the old population worldwide is a great concern. Two of the biggest complaints of OA patients are joint pain and inflammation. Currently, people are relying on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and steroids to control pain and inflammation. However, long-term use of these pharmaceutical drugs has negative health consequences in the elderly, including gastro-intestinal, respiratory, and renal diseases. Natural products are receiving more attention than ever as alternative treatments against OA for their efficacies and safety. The root of Paeonia lactiflora Pal and the gum resin of Commiphora myrrha have been used as analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents since ancient time. A new herbal formula composed of P. lactiflora root and C. myrrha gum resin extracts, known as HT083, has shown promising antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects in a rodent model of OA. We design this study to investigate the safety and the efficacy of HT083 to prevent OA in patients with mild OA. ⋯ This trial is expected to provide clinical evidence on the effectiveness and the safety of HT083 as a natural treatment for mild OA.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder. While bringing psychologic pain to patients, it also damages their social function, which is a great threat to people's life and health. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies have been used clinically to treat PTSD; however, the selection strategies of different CAM interventions in clinical practice is still uncertain, and the purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of different CAM therapies using systematic review and network meta-analysis. ⋯ The results of this study will provide references for evaluating the influence of different CAM therapies for PTSD, and provide decision-making references for clinical research.

The evaluation of the treatment for old osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture pain by percutaneous vertebroplasty.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical effect of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) in the treatment of old osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) pain. A retrospective study was conducted on the clinical and imaging data of 31 patients with old OVCF treated by PVP from June 2010 to September 2011. ⋯ PVP can effectively relieve the pain caused by old OVCF, and the motor ability of the patients is improved obviously. However, the recovery of Cobb angle and vertebral kyphosis angle was not obvious.

This study aimed to identify characteristics of individuals who are most likely to benefit from long-term opioid therapy in terms of reduction in pain severity and improved mental health-related quality of life (mQoL) without considering potential risks. ⋯ The analysis failed to identify clinically meaningful predictors of opioid therapy effectiveness, making it difficult to inform clinicians about which patients with chronic non-cancer pain are most likely to benefit from long-term opioid therapy.
