The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated access barriers for patients with opioid use disorder. Telehealth presents an opportunity to improve access, treatment quality, and patient outcomes. ⋯ Our findings suggest that telehealth-initiated buprenorphine treatment is associated with reduced opioid overdose rate and improved patient engagement. Our findings strengthen the case for extending telehealth exemptions and prescribing flexibilities for treatment.

Inequitable access to nonpharmacologic pain treatment providers among cancer-free U.S. adults.
Using evidence-based nonpharmacologic pain treatments may prevent opioid overuse and associated adverse outcomes. There is limited data on the impact of access-promoting social determinants of health (SDoH: education, income, transportation) on use of nonpharmacologic pain treatments. Our objective was to examine the relationship between SDoH and use of nonpharmacologic pain treatment providers. Our goal was to understand policy-actionable factors contributing to inequity in pain treatment. ⋯ These findings highlight the substantial influence access-promoting SDoH have on pain treatment utilization.

Coprescribing naloxone with opioids could reduce the risk of overdose. By the end of 2020, 8 U.S. states implemented coprescribing laws requiring the prescription of naloxone alongside certain opioid prescriptions. This study examined the impacts of state laws that require coprescribing opioids and naloxone on codispensing practices. ⋯ Laws requiring coprescribing naloxone with certain opioid prescriptions are associated with small-in-magnitude increases in codispensing in some states. Broadening the categories of opioid prescriptions covered in naloxone coprescribing requirement laws and implementing health system strategies to encourage providers to coprescribe naloxone could help to magnify the impacts of these laws.

To evaluate the implementation of 3 electronic health record (EHR)-based interventions to increase prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) use in the emergency department (ED): EHR-PDMP integration, addition of a PDMP risk score, and addition of EHR-based clinical decision support alert to review the PDMP when prescribing an opioid. ⋯ The EHR-PDMP integration did not increase PDMP use in the ED, but a PDMP risk score and a clinical decision support alert were associated with modest increases in the probability of PDMP review. When the PDMP is reviewed, ED clinicians are less likely to prescribe opioids to patients with a high number of prior opioid prescriptions.
