Multicenter StudySurgical Site Infection Rates in Four Cities in Brazil: Findings of the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium.
There are no data on surgical site infection (SSI) rates stratified by surgical procedures (SPs) in Brazil, and our objective was to report such rates. ⋯ Our SSI rates were greater in two of the four analyzed types of SPs compared with CDC-NHSN, but similar to most INICC rates. These findings on the epidemiology of SSI in Brazil will enable us to introduce targeted interventions for infection control.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy syndrome, commonly occurring in postmenopausal women, is characterized by transient apical systolic dysfunction in absence of coronary lesions. The cardiomyopathy is often observed after intense stressful events such as a major surgical procedure. ⋯ After cardiac surgery takotsubo cardiomyopathy should be suspected if clinical and instrumental criteria are met, and promptly differentiated from the more frequent acute myocardial infarction. Prognosis may be favorable if appropriate conservative medical treatment is promptly started.

Submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) has become a potential option for the endoscopic treatment of a selected group of patients with submucosal tumors (SMTs) originating from the muscularis propria layer in the upper gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the incidence and management of STER-related complications. ⋯ Although the incidence of STER-related complications was relatively high, most of these complications were minor and did not require therapeutic intervention. STER is a safe technique for the treatment of upper gastrointestinal SMTs.

Since the percutaneous posterolateral approach in treating lumbar disc herniation was introduced in 1973, percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) has become a routine minimally invasive spinal procedure. However, as clinical evidence accumulated, several complications of PELD have raised our concerns, including the intraoperative injury to neural, vascular structures and failure of surgery. Herein, we present 2 patients who experienced guidewire breakage during PELD procedure to demonstrate the details. ⋯ In conclusion, the guidewire breakage in PELD procedures is a rare but severe complication, which requires immediate removal. An appropriate manner and fluoroscopic control are recommended to forestall such problems. It is.
