Comparison of valdecoxib and an oxycodone-acetaminophen combination for acute musculoskeletal pain in the emergency department: a randomized controlled trial.
Oral opioids are potent analgesics that are used to treat acute pain in the emergency department (ED). However, they are associated with adverse events such as sedation that may delay safe patient discharge. ⋯ Valdecoxib is as effective as an oxycodone-acetaminophen combination in treating ED patients with acute musculoskeletal pain at 30 minutes and less likely to cause sedation or the need for rescue analgesia over the next day.

Ultrasound image quality comparison between an inexpensive handheld emergency department (ED) ultrasound machine and a large mobile ED ultrasound system.
Questions have been raised regarding image quality (IQ) provided by portable ultrasound (US) machines. ⋯ A statistically significant difference was seen between GE 400 and SonoSite in IQ and RES, but not DET.

Does the lateral chest radiograph help pediatric emergency physicians diagnose pneumonia? A randomized clinical trial.
To determine whether the addition of the lateral chest radiograph to the frontal view influences the pediatric emergency physician's diagnosis and management of patients with pneumonia. ⋯ The addition of the lateral chest radiograph to the frontal view did not improve the sensitivity or specificity of pediatric emergency physicians in their diagnosis of pneumonia in children.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialA randomized, prospective, multisite comparison of pediatric prehospital training methods.
Results of prehospital pediatric continuing education using train-the-trainer and CD-ROM training methods were compared to each other and to a control group. The null hypothesis was that no differences would be found in pretraining and posttraining measurements of knowledge and performance by either training method. ⋯ In this small sample, interactive CD-ROM training shows promise for improving performance. The research design, with additional guards against sample size attrition, may provide a model for multisite EMS education research.

Office preparedness for pediatric emergencies: a randomized, controlled trial of an office-based training program.
Many children enter the emergency medical system through primary care offices, yet these offices may not be adequately prepared to stabilize severely ill children. We conducted this study to evaluate the effectiveness of an office-based educational program designed to improve the preparation of primary care practices for pediatric emergencies. ⋯ The findings suggest that the intervention was well received and motivated practices to take concrete actions to prepare for pediatric emergencies.
