Background: With the emergence of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), appropriate training for emergency medical services (EMS) personnel on personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential. We aimed: 1) to examine the change in proportions of EMS personnel reporting awareness of and training in PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic; and 2) to determine factors associated with reporting these outcomes. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data collected from October 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 from currently working, nationally certified EMS personnel (n = 15,339), assessing N95 respirator fit testing; training in air purified respirators (APR) or powered APR (PAPR) use; and training on PPE use for chemical, biological, and nuclear (CBN) threats. ⋯ Factors consistently associated with lower odds of awareness/training included part-time employment, providing 9-1-1 response service, working at a non-fire-based EMS agency, and working in a rural setting. Conclusions: CDC guidance on COVID-19 for EMS may have increased N95 fit testing and training, but there remain substantial gaps in training on PPE use among EMS personnel. As the pandemic continues in our communities, EMS agencies should be supported in efforts to adequately prepare their staff.

A Retrospective Analysis of the Impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic on Health Care Workers in a Tertiary Hospital in Turkey.
Several vaccines have been developed and approved for use against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2; however, the use of personal protective equipment remains important owing to the lack of effective specific treatment and whole community immunity. Hydroxychloroquine sulfate was a treatment option in the early days of the pandemic; however, it was subsequently removed owing to a lack of evidence as an effective treatment. We aimed to evaluate the testing and infection characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 among health care personnel and determine the effectiveness of prophylactic hydroxychloroquine sulfate use to prevent transmission. ⋯ Protective measures in low-risk areas of our hospital require improvements. All health care personnel should be trained on personal protective equipment use. There was no evidence to support the effectiveness of prophylactic hydroxychloroquine sulfate against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 transmission.

A Dispatch Screening Tool to Identify Patients at High Risk for COVID-19 in the Prehospital Setting.
Emergency medical services (EMS) dispatchers have made efforts to determine whether patients are high risk for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) so that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) can be donned. A screening tool is valuable as the healthcare community balances protection of medical personnel and conservation of PPE. There is little existing literature on the efficacy of prehospital COVID-19 screening tools. The objective of this study was to determine the positive and negative predictive value of an emergency infectious disease surveillance tool for detecting COVID-19 patients and the impact of positive screening on PPE usage. ⋯ This dispatch-screening questionnaire has a high negative predictive value but moderate sensitivity and therefore should be used with some caution to guide EMS crews in their PPE usage. Clinical judgment is still essential and may supersede screening status.
