Observational StudyImpact of Blood Sampling on Anemia in PICU: A Prospective Cohort Study.
Fifty percent of children are anemic after a critical illness. Iatrogenic blood testing may be a contributor to this problem. The objectives of this study were to describe blood sampling practice in a PICU, determine patient factors associated with increased sampling, and examine the association among blood sampling volume, anemia at PICU discharge, and change in hemoglobin from PICU entry to PICU discharge. ⋯ Diagnostic blood sampling in PICU is associated with anemia at discharge. Twenty-five percent of blood losses from sampling is wasted. Volumes are highest for patients with sepsis, shock, or cardiac surgery, and in patients with vascular access or ventilatory support.

ReviewProPACC: Protocol for a Trial of Integrated Specialty Palliative Care for Critically Ill Older Adults.
Each year, approximately one million older adults die in American intensive care units (ICUs) or survive with significant functional impairment. Inadequate symptom management, surrogates' psychological distress and inappropriate healthcare use are major concerns. Pioneering work by Dr. J. Randall Curtis paved the way for integrating palliative care (PC) specialists to address these needs, but convincing proof of efficacy has not yet been demonstrated. ⋯ This trial will provide robust evidence about the impact of integrating SPC with critical care on patient, family, and health system outcomes.

Multicenter StudyEducational Outcomes of Childhood Survivors of Critical Illness-A Population-Based Linkage Study.
Major postintensive care sequelae affect up to one in three adult survivors of critical illness. Large cohorts on educational outcomes after pediatric intensive care are lacking. We assessed primary school educational outcomes in a statewide cohort of children who survived PICU during childhood. ⋯ In this population-based study of childhood PICU survivors, 14.03% did not meet NMSs in the standardized primary school assessment. Socioeconomic status, underlying diseases, and severity on presentation allow risk-stratification to identify children most likely to benefit from individual follow-up and support.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudySteps to recovery: Body weight-supported treadmill training for critically ill patients: A randomized controlled trial.
Early mobilization of critically ill patients improves functional recovery, but is often hampered by tubes, drains, monitoring devices and muscular weakness. A mobile treadmill with bodyweight support facilitates early mobilization and may shorten recovery time to independent ambulation as compared to usual care physiotherapy alone. ⋯ BWSTT seems a promising intervention to enhance recovery of ambulation and shorten hospital length of stay of ICU patients, justifying a sufficiently powered multicenter RCT.
