Effectiveness of Convalescent Plasma Therapy in Severe or Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a novel respiratory infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2); there are few specific treatments. Convalescent plasma (CP), donated by people who have recovered from COVID-19, is an investigational therapy for severe or critically ill patients with COVID-19. ⋯ CP therapy may be a potential therapeutic option in severe or critically ill patients with COVID-19.

Amongst critically ill trauma patients admitted to ICU and still alive and in ICU after 24 hours, it is unclear which trauma scoring system offers the best performance in predicting in-hospital mortality. ⋯ In ICU patients admitted with a trauma diagnosis and still alive and in ICU after 24 hours, ANZROD and APACHE III had a superior performance when compared with traditional trauma-specific scoring systems in predicting hospital mortality. This was observed both overall and in each of the subgroup analyses. The anatomical scoring systems all performed poorly in the ICU population of Victoria, Australia.

This study aimed to determine the association between sarcopenic findings of the psoas muscle and mortality in patients with sepsis; further, it aimed to assess its clinical utility, in addition to the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, in predicting mortality. ⋯ The results suggested an association of the sarcopenic findings of the psoas muscle on CT imaging with 90-day mortality; however, the modified SOFA had few additional clinical values to that of SOFA in predicting 90-day mortality.

Postintensive Care Syndrome in Survivors of Critical Illness Related to Coronavirus Disease 2019: Cohort Study From a New York City Critical Care Recovery Clinic.
Determine the characteristics of postintensive care syndrome in the cognitive, physical, and psychiatric domains in coronavirus disease 2019 ICU survivors. ⋯ Survivors of critical illness related to coronavirus disease 2019 are at high risk of developing postintensive care syndrome. These findings highlight the importance of planning for appropriate post-ICU care to diagnose and treat this population.

Critical illness-rlated corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI) is a known sequela of severe injury and illness, yet its diagnosis and management are challenging. We hypothesized that CIRCI has significant variability in its diagnosis and management within surgical intensive care units (SICUs). Our study aimed to assess the state of practice of CIRCI in the American College of Surgery Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) certified level 1 trauma centers. ⋯ This study demonstrates extreme variability in the diagnosis and management of CIRCI. In particular most providers acknowledge a knowledge gap in the diagnosis of CIRCI and the role of corticosteroids in hemorrhagic shock. Few providers are using adjunctive mineralocorticoids in septic shock, although recent level 1 evidence have shown a survival benefit. These responses reflect an opportunity for national improvement in the management of CIRCI.
