    AbstractManagement of the patient in respiratory distress requires an efficient and accurate diagnostic and therapeutic strategy. This article describes the approach to patients with respiratory compromise, including the indications and techniques for performing emergency surgical procedures. The clinical features of upper airway obstruction, thoracic wall trauma, and pleural space disease are discussed.
