AbstractCefuroxime (a third-generation cephalosporin) administered parenterally (mostly i.m.) at a dose of 2-4 g/day for 4-16 days (mean 9.26 days) displayed marked antibacterial activity and excellent tolerability when employed in the treatment of variously located acute infections in 120 drug addict out-patients with almost constant pronounced immune depression. The drug is regarded as the antibiotic of choice in the outpatient management of infection episodes in immunodepressed subjects at high risk of infection.
