AbstractLaxatives are classified according to their actions on the gut, and the special role and use of senna in the treatment of constipation are discussed. Standardised senna is the most physiological of all the non-fibre laxatives and is safe when used in appropriate dosage avoiding loose stools. Additional advice on bulk supplement should be given.
