    AbstractC. Walton Lillehei (1918-1999) from the Surgery Department of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (MN, USA), was the precursor of open heart surgery. He successively introduced heart-lung machine, intracardiac repairs, pacemaker, and mechanical cardiac valves.
