Session TitleCancer Case Report Posters IISESSION TYPE: Case Report PosterPRESENTED ON: Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMINTRODUCTION: Primary paraganglioma of the lung is a rare tumor of which few cases are reported in literature.Case PresentationWe report the case of an 63-year man who presented with cough, intermittent palpitations and dyspnea. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the chest revealed in the middle lobe, a rounded, high-density lesion in presence of irregular profiles with a diameter of 24 mm. The lesion was suspicious for malignancy. Fine needle aspiration cells was performed. The cytological report was positive for malignant cells. Surgical resection was the treatment of choice. The results of the biochemical tests and post-operative histological examination allow definitive diagnosis: primary pulmonary paraganglioma.DiscussionPrimitive lung paragangliomas are often discovered incidentally upon examination of routine chest radiographs, and patients are free of symptoms and hypertension. From the literature about 10% of paragangliomas are malignant and all patients have been treated surgically with either local excision or lobectomy.ConclusionsParagangliomas are identified and characterized with the use of computed tomography and other imaging methods, but for definitive diagnosis, histopathologic evaluation is necessary. There are, however, no histological or biochemical markers that can predict reliably the malignant tendency of these tumours.Reference #1: Dana Erickson et al.
