Session TitleLung Cancer Posters ISESSION TYPE: Poster PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMPURPOSE: Immunohistochemistry is a highly valuable and widely used tool in the sub-typing of lung carcinomas, which would be assisted by the availability of lung-specific tumour markers. The importance of cell-cell junction proteins (including armadillo proteins) in tumour biology is known, but there is limited knowledge on specific intercellular adhesion proteins.MethodsWe report on the immunohistochemical localization of plakophilin-1, keratin-15 and desmoglein-3 intercellular adhesion proteins in samples from 75 primary non-small cell lung cancers in non-treated patients.ResultsThe staining pattern of these proteins differed between squamous-cell carcinomas (SCC) and adenocarcinomas, with no membrane staining in the latter. Membrane staining by all three proteins was characteristic of squamous-cell carcinomas of the lung in our study. In squamous cell carcinomas, we observed a relationship between the presence/absence of these proteins in the membrane and the differentiation grade, with a more intense staining in better differentiated areas.ConclusionsThe staining pattern of these proteins differed between squamous-cell carcinomas (SCC) and adenocarcinomas, with no membrane staining in the latter.
