Session TitleCOPD Rehabilitation PostersSESSION TYPE: Poster PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMPURPOSE: Acute exacerbations (AEs) have a negative impact on various aspects of the progression of COPD, but objective and detailed data on the impact of hospitalizations for an AE are needed. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of hospitalization on multiple physical parameters in adults with acute exacerbation of COPD.MethodsWe aimed to investigate the repercussion of hospitalization on physical parameters like handgrip strength, quadriceps dynamometry, One leg stance test (OLS) and 2 minutes step in place (2MSP) in 66 patients (mean age, 75.87 years [6.14 SD]; body mass index, 26.46 ± 6.49 kg/m2) at the beginning and end of a hospitalization period (mean 12.17)for an AE.ResultsMean differences on muscle force were 1.403 ± 5.44 [0.053 , 2.75] p=0.42 for handgrip strenght (mean ±SD [CI 95%]) and 1.936 ± 2.583 [1.301 , 2.571], p<0.001 for quadriceps dynamometry when compared before and after hospitalization. 2 MSP test shows no significant improvement across the hospitalization periods, mean change -1.091 ± 11.966 [-4.040 , 1.858] p=0.463. OLS test shows worse values after the hospitalization period, mean change: 1.81 ± 6.002 [0.343 , 3.294] p=0.17.ConclusionsIn this group of COPD adults the hospitalization period resulted in worse values of physical function.Clinical ImplicationsPhysical deterioration can be a result of the bed rest in COPD patients.
