Session TitleTobacco Cessation and Prevention PostersSESSION TYPE: Poster PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMPURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of smoking in women diagnosed of Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS) in a service of respiratory medicine corresponding to a University Hospital, and its relationship with the severity of illness.MethodsRetrospective study in which we include the patients diagnosed of SAHS by means of portable polygraphy in a 8 years period. We used the SPSS program to statistical analysis of the dates.ResultsWe made the diagnosis of SAHS in 1513 cases, and 23% were women. Both in men and in women, the majority concerned to the severe SAHS group (58,3% in men and 54,3% in women) Among males, most were or had been smokers (19,4% current smokers and 38% former smokers), whereas among females, the majority were never smokers (82,8%). Classified by illness severity, smokers as non smokers as well ex-smokers, most of them belonged to severe SAHS group (61.8% smokers, 54.5% non smokers and 59.8% ex-smokers). Among women who smoke diagnosed of SAHS, 15.4% had a severe level, 8.16% moderate and 1.3% were mild.Conclusions1) There is relationship between the tobacco cconsumption in our studied population of women and the severity in the diagnosis of SAHS. 2) The highest percentage of women smokers have a severe SAHS, considering tobacco consumption an a worsening factor for this disease.Clinical ImplicationsWe must recommend stop smoking, not only in patients with diseases related to his consumption, but also in patients with SAHS, without forgetting the smoking women.DisclosureThe following authors have nothing to disclose: Francisca Marquez, Maria Jose Antona, María Teresa Gómez Vizcaíno, Pilar Cordero Montero, Hernando Chávez RoldánNo Product/Research Disclosure Information.
