Session TitleTuberculosis PostersSESSION TYPE: Poster PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMPURPOSE: The ancient killer Tuberculosis is one of the major health problem, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Globally about 2 billion people are infected , 8 million develop active diseases & 2 million die per year . Though modern treatment cures the patient within 6 months , this long duration of smear& culture conversion favors transmission & acquired drug resistance .Malnutrition a common association with TB puts a patient deficient in various micronutrient like vitamin A & zinc , unique to facilitate theMethodsA randomized, controlled, prospective study was carried in the, National institute of diseases of the chest & hospital , Dhaka, Bangladesh. Among 119 smear positive TB patients 111 patients had completed the study . 54 patient(group A) had received vitamin A& zinc supplements ,57(group B) did not . Lab investigation(HB%, ESR , CRP ,CXR) were carried out & clinical evaluation was made in each patients on arrival in the ward .Group A received CAT-1 anti TB +Vit-A(5000 iu/d) & Zinc(15mg/d). GroupB received only CAT-1 antiTB. After completion of intensive phase(2 months) further evaluation was made.ResultsRadiological improvement , rise of HB%, fall of ESR & CRP were more in micronutrients group . Smear conversion( more in groupA) had statistically significant difference between two groups of patients (p<0.001).ConclusionsVitamin A & zinc supplementation in intensive phase reveals better result than no supplement .Clinical ImplicationsWe can recommand it for all sputum positivt cases .as a result contact will be benifitedDisclosureThe following authors have nothing to disclose: S.
