AbstractThe medical emergency of diabetic ketoacidosis is a particular problem for children with insulin-dependent diabetes because it is frequently associated with their initial presentation. Subsequent episodes can be prevented with proper use of personal glucose monitoring. The pathophysiology and diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis are reviewed, and a framework for the management of this complication in children is provided.
