    AbstractA historical perspective of the evolution of blood filtration is presented. Topics addressed include recognition of aggregates in blood as mediators of morbidity, targeted for removal with gross clot screens, and evolution through the implementation of universal leukocyte reduction. Future directions for the development of blood filters are also described.
